Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

My area hasn't been doubled yet. I'm on XL, but because I have an old modem, I only get 20meg rather than 30 meg.

My understanding from the information I saw when the speed doubling was announced was that when my area was doubled and XL went from 30meg to 60meg, I would get sent a superhub free of charge and that would be it. I can recall no mention that recieving the superhub would put people on a new 12 month contract.

A month or so back, there was a message for me on my Virgin media, that said I could get a free upgrade to 60 meg now, prior to the doubling. When I enquired, I was told that having the 60 meg before the speed doubling had reached my area would incurr a new 12 month contract, which is fair enough. They said that if I waited untill my area was doubled, the Superhub would be sent for free and there would be no new 12 month contract.

Speaking to VM today, they said that when my area is doubled next year, that I would be sent the superhub, but it would automatically incurr a new 12 month contract. Does anyone know which is the correct situation?

If both situations incurr a new 12 month contract, what is the point of waiting?

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

I am still waiting for speed increase from 10 to 20.
When I asked how much an ugrade would be before then it would have to be to 60 meg.
No discount offered but I would get a hub but would have to pay for delivery and the extra monthly charge.
And would be on a new contract. I could save a bit by paying up front for the phone rental charge which I regard as a rolling contract in effect.

I thought that was the case. I rang today to see what the options were with regard to the superhub following on from the thread I started yesterday, that you replied to

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...r-options.html

I did order a Dlink router from ebay yesterday, as you suggested but wanted to see what options I had on the superhub. I have been with cable for fifteen years and have no plans to leave VM for another provider, but I don't want to be tied into a further 12 month contract.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

i think your deals decent at the moment, i may be wrong. without a discount 'bundle'/'loyalty' i think your paying around £3.41 for bb or £5.41 if 'Talk 08 2' is a tickle? i thought that expired? sod the SH and double until they do it themselves.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

i looked at my virgin media account on line the other day and it showed the speed as having being doubled to 100Mb, I am covered by uddingston. It also stated that to get benfits on wifi i should order my free superhub on line. I did this with an expected delivery date of 3/1/13. Wee while later got an email through to say that it appeared that i was a new customer wanting to join and to phone customer service. I did this using the 0845 number they quoted, (stupid i know now, should have used 150). Anyway, lady i spoke to stated she would get my new superhub sent out and that i would now be in a new 12 month contract. I argued that this was not the case as it was Virgin who were doubling my speed and telling me to gt the superhub, it was not an upgrade request from me. She would not budge so i asked to speak to her manager. We argued the same point until finally after a 26 minute phone call, she then told me the "good news", she would send me out the superhub with no change to my contract. Have read loads of bad reports about it but will give it a go. I am currently using a netgear WNR2000 router and in the morning i can get round about 40 Mb download speed but at night it is dropping to maybe 6 or 7, so guess it is pretty congested at Uddingston.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

you have a VMNG300 modem linked to a WNR2000 router? the WNR2000 will limit you speeds wise. the VMNG300 will only bond 4 downstream channels but seems a lot more solid than the SuperHub. I'd call in and cancel that SuperHub and instead invest in buying a decent router. Your choice though, you can test out the SuperHub and put it into modem mode if it doesn't meet your needs. You'll still want to invest in a router if you do put the SuperHub into modem mode. The WNR2000 router isn't sufficient enough to handle your speeds.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

Quite a few postcodes were updated today to say the upgrades were done. Have yet to find anyone in those areas who has actually got the upgrade. Plenty who have rebooted hubs and still getting the old speed though...my area says 120mb upgrades will happen up to November 2013 now too.

Got a feeling virgin missed their dates once again . Seems mandatory that they have to be 6+ months late on every date they give

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

thenry, thanks for your input. Can you tell me is it easy enough to swap the superhub over to modem mode and attach a new wireless router. Any suggestions for a reasonable priced well matched router. Cheers.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

Virgin have been real crafty. The areas that said they would be upgraded in December showed as being done on the 31st Dec yet none of them got the upgrade. Those questioning it on the Virgin forums are told they have to contact them to get it sorted, its not automatic.

The only conclusion you can get from that is they did not do the upgrades as said and are hoping no one notices while manually upgrading those that did. Exactly the underhand stuff that rightly gives customers a bad impression of how virgin will try and con them at every chance they get.
