Angry PS3, iPhone and iPad Extremely Slow Speeds With 60mb Superhub

Hi all!

Well after having 10mb for so long now, and the older VM modem, I thought it was time to upgrade. I actually upgraded the V+ to Tivo too, only cost a few pounds extra a month, even though I was paying too much anyway.

So anyway, Superhub installed today, MacBook is running great with speeds at 50-60mb over wireless. However, our iPad, iPhone and PS3 which of course are all wireless are suffering pretty badly. The speed test on the PS3 is showing an average of 1mb, yes that's right, 1mb! The iPhone and iPad are averaging at around 3mb. I run the speed test over and over on the iPad in particular, and noticed that the dial pops up to about 5-6mb, then slowly runs down to around 2-3mb where the final speed is gathered. Interestingly, one of the tests did the opposite, the dial slowly moved up to 10mb where it held. Another important thing to mention is that the PS3 was getting test speeds of about 7-8mb on our 10mb connection on the old modem/router.

The techie guy who installed everything also left the DLink router that we were previously using in place, but connected to the Superhub. He said that he's left it installed so that I can connect other devices if something can't pick up the Superhub. Seemed strange to me, but according to the PS3, the DLink router has better signal coverage than the Superhub, but the DLink router can barely get to our kitchen!

So I called VM tech support in India, their reply was sorry we cannot help with your iPad or PS3, just computers. But they did try creating another SSID and key to test with the iPad by taking over my computer screen, which didn't help the speeds unfortunately. He then redirected me to digital home support, however their £10 a month for 6 months fee was just laughable. Although they did seem eager to help resolve everything...

My question is, what can I do about this slow connection on our other non-laptop wi-fi devices? Surely I should get faster than 1mb on the PS3 on a 60mb connection?! I said yes to the speed upgrade mainly to benefit from being able to successfully use Netflix on the PS3 as previously it was so slow or just impossible. Now its worse!

Does anyone have any advice, tips or methods to help resolve this? I may as well have not upgraded if there's no solution...

Put the Superhub into modem mode and just use the Dlink, will probably save you a lot of hassle in the long run

Just an update, I switched the Superhub to Modem Mode, ran a speed test on the laptop and the speed peaked at 25mb instead of the previously 50-60mb with the Superhub as a router.

However, I ran the speed test on the PS3 and it flew through the test much quicker, gave a speed of 10mb, which is an improvement, although nowhere near 60mb! The iPhone test got about 13mb.

Perhaps the Dlink router can't handle much more than 25mb. If I had a better router would this help? Would the PS3 still download at around 10mb?

What's going on here?

The Dlink should be fine, make sure there are no QoS settings enabled in its interface

Check that the D-Link router is switched to 802.11n for wireless, not 802.11g

It was set at 802.11 Mixed (n/g/b), just changed it to 802.11n ONLY, and the MacBook just refused to connect to the router, kept getting a timeout connection error. Changed back to Mixed and its back again, still at same speeds.

Does Applications|Utilities|System Profiler|Network|Airport give any useful info about how the Mac is connected? Be interesting to see if it's only connecting as 802.11g?

Here's some info gathered from the System Information utility (That's the utility name in Mountain Lion, and Airport is now called Wi-Fi):

Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x8D)
Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n
Supported Channels: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116, 120, 124, 128, 132, 136, 140

It then gives more info about the actual Wi-Fi connections themselves available, 3 are available, one is mine, all 802.11g. Not important I guess.

Very important!!!

802.11g maxes out around 25Mb/s...

I didn't mean that! Hehe but yes I see. So that makes sense, but why would my MacBook refuse to connect to the Dlink router when it's in 802.11n only mode? It's just timing out within a second...

What firmware is running on the D-Link?

Apple cards do tend to play funny sometimes... (e.g. refusing to connect to 2.4Ghz networks in HT40 mode)

Oh hmm just checked and it's just 1.00VG. Sounds like it needs a firmware update, I'll give it a shot!

I've found the speed test on the PS3 to be pretty much useless. It's ok for an ADSL connection but can't get over 10meg on a decent connection. Sony's servers are also complete pants when it comes to download speeds.

Using the built-in wifi it's even worse. I can't imagine what it would be like using it with a superhubs wifi too, sounds like a match made in hell.

Urgh. VM firmware. Put DD-WRT on it, build 16785 if you want to keep a decent speed...
