Elite: Dangerous
Looks like a possible remake of the old, old, old favourite Elite (from the BBC B Micro fame) might make a return
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20165344
I know that will make Dilli happy

"Elite is a game that I've wanted to come back to for a very, very long time," Mr Braben told the BBC. "It's the sort of game that I would very much like to play today."

In which case, download a copy of Oolite and stop killing tribute acts like Elite: The New Kind.
Braben has been talking about re-making Elite for years now. And now he's talking about re-making it but only if a load of people give him the money first. Somehow I don't think this is going to happen. For those that want a modern spacefaring game there are plenty to choose from and for those that still want to haul computers between Zaonce and Lave, Oolite has everything original Elite had, plus a heck of a lot more thanks to its customisable design and extensive support community.

re: Elite: Dangerous
Oh yes I do like my elite
I have oolite and TNK as well, but I tend to play it on an original BBC micro, although of course I have a BBC emulator on my nexus 7
I'd definitely give a new version a go, but as Chris says it's been ongoing for ages so I can't see it happening.

re: Elite: Dangerous
Problem with oolite and E:TNK is that they are just clones with updated graphics (or not in the case of TNK)
What's being put forward here is a new game based on the original concept but in it's own right a totally new game..

re: Elite: Dangerous
Which sort of begs the question, why bother? There are a lot of space fighting/trading games out there now. If Braben is using the Elite brand name to disguise an attempt to make just another space sim, it's no wonder he can't get financial backing from the usual sources.
Elite's enduring reputation is due to the originality and playability of the original. It's far from clear that Braben can - or even intends to - produce another genre-defining piece of work with Elite: Dangerous. Possibly the title is an indication in itself, "Dangerous" being two ranks below "Elite" in the original scheme.

re: Elite: Dangerous
I'd like to see both Elite and the XWing games properly remade. I'd also like to see Descent 4 released, as well as a sequel to the Descent: Freespace games, which were pretty good games and had good effects (for the time).

re: Elite: Dangerous
I liked elite and managed to get to Archangel by destroying a space station.
Then I got a bit bored and found a cheat with lots of money. Eventually I made a Tardis like ship, small on outside with huge hold. This way I could load up with goods and fuel and then travel huge distances.

I never see the point of cheating, it ruins games in my opinion.
Elite was awesome i played that for years on my Acorn Electron.

re: Elite: Dangerous
Cheating doesn't help I agree. I just got bored at that point so into the what else is out there type of thinking.
Once you have the gadgets to dock and so forth then things can get a little tedious. You've done missions, you've got the trading worked out, you're armed to the teeth.
My only cheat was to add a huge amount of credit. Other stuff I worked out by myself.
A bit like once you've finished some games you may want to "cheat" whether by software or crib sheets to see if there is anything else to find.

re: Elite: Dangerous
Cheating can be therapeutic in some instances. I used to find it very relaxing when I had a hard day at work, and something wound me up. I'd just fire up a Grand Theft Auto game, activate one of their "get all weapons" cheats, then just go round the virtual town or city and blow as much up as I could.
Didn't use it to help with my actual game play though.
