Question What do I need to know!?

Hey everyone,

We've got Virgin TV (M+) arriving next week.

I gather it's a Tivo box, so I'm after some pointers for a n00b who's coming from a Sky HD box!

Is there an iPhone/iPad app like Sky have, or do you have to use a website bookmark to do a remote record?

Also, where can I go to get some good info on what the Tivo box will offer me that our Sky HD box doesn't?

I'm particularly interested in the VOD catalogue and catch up apps, such as BBC iPlayer etc.

There is a terrible iPhone & Android app available to do that with a replacement for it "coming soon".

You can record three things at once, Film4 HD and listen to Spotify assuming you have already built playlists and have a separate £10 subscription for it.

Virgin has all four main catchup and there may be catchup for Sky1 but that is about it for M+.

Ah ok, thanks.

I've just looked on the App Store and 2 come up-the official Virgin one and one from the tvguide.co.uk people called "TV Guide Virgin Edition".

I use their app for Sky too currently, so I'll grab both and see what they're like.

I don't use Spotify, but it's good to know about Film4 HD.

I was more interested in things like back catalogue TV shows and series-or have I got the wrong end of the stick about Virgin's VOD?

Re: What do I need to know!?

Non-catchup on M+ you get; BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Discovery & PBS.

ITV and Sky has very little content but between the others there is probably two or three hundred hours of stuff.

Sorry, what do you mean by "non catchup"?

Do you mean the BBC, C4, Discovery & PBS that you mentioned above?

Sorry if these are silly questions.

The back catalogue shows you said you were asking about.

Ah, so I can browse shows that were (at some point) on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Discovery & PBS?

As opposed to relying on an iPlayer type thing, that would only go back say 30 days?

Thanks.

Hi,and welcome,

Just a quick question, did you not research what you would be getting by moving to VM?,or were you forced to move (ie moving house to none Sky area etc),just seems a little strange that you would switch without knowing the full facts of the service you have ordered.

I switched mainly to reduce our bills, but now I'm taking the time to make sure I get the best out of the service.

Re: What do I need to know!?

Whishlists are a great feature of Tivo, that the Sky box doesn't have. With these, you can add future shows that you know of, that may not get broadcast for months ahead, and therefore not on the EPG, and Tivo will automatically record them when they do turn up. You can add you favourite actors, directors, or any keyword that is relevant to something you would want to watch if it ever turned up on the EPG on any of the channels in your package

If you had the XL package, you would get a much better library of VOD. This includes dramas, documentaries, general entertainment and loads of music.

You would also get all the Sky Anytime shows, except for Sky Atlantic content.

With your M+ package you will get over 500 hours worth of films on PPV with Virgin Movies.

If you subscribe to Sky Movies, the VOD library will give you this content as well.
