Re: new Hub to be released?

I would welcome a new hub been made by Samsung as in the past the Samsung V+ was the best version.

I would welcome a move by ISP's to stop trying to lock subs down to a limited set of options EG DNS servers, no QOS,ETC by supplying them with cheapskate Hubs that are mostly under powered and only seem to work in unexpected ways.

VM are not alone in this, Sky and BE both try it on and there are probably other ISP's that I don't know about.

Why do they bother as judging by the crap hardware and firmware supplied they obviously can't or won't afford to supply decent kit. One can only suppose that insisting on locked down Hubs gives them the ability to snoop on us via these Hubs. Maybe they can sell the data obtained, who knows? Their has got to be a reason for it other than the half baked standardised hardware for support purposes. VM have practically no readily accessable customer facing support that you can have a meaningful conversation with anyway.

So c'mon Guys bin all these underperforming Hub's, save yourselves a small fortune by only supplying us with Modems.

me too. When it comes to networking you think or Motorola and Cisco as the big names but given Samsungs reputation for technology with mobile phones and tvs etc I would definitely be willing to try a Samsung modem because I believe they are a company who care about the quality of the product they produce. It is all about having confidence in the brand.

I think some use of Google may have helped here as they do not manufacture modems so if an agent did say such a thing to a customer then they were lying, now imagine if it was their first attempt would you really want such a device.

Try Googling "samsung Docsis 3 modem"

I did expect someone to actually check if such a device actually existed but everyone just went misty eyed over a potential new supplier.

As it is just a figment of someones imagination it could look however you want it to look, but external antennas would be nice.

As they do not make them why would the make one now, it was just an agent fobbing someone off nothing more, I would prefer a mainstream known modem manufacturer rather than a first time Virgin media bodge job.

Re: new Hub to be released?

Samsung make routers and have made dsl modems so theres no reason why they couldnt produce a cable modem

I think the problem with vm using samsung is the age old problem of price

Samsung is used for the TiVo boxes so prices can't be that bad.

Neither Be or Sky *force* you to use their CPE and only their CPE though. In Sky's case the modem is separate and you can use whatever router you want (granted, it's difficult to find a compatible one) and in Be's case, you can use whatever modem you want as well. In fact many users have succeeded in replacing the modem on Sky Fibre with their own as well.

Tivo boxes have built in cable modems, so in a way, Samsung already make cable modems for VM. They're just integrated into a TV box instead of a router.

So you would happily trust a first time modem from a company that will allow Virgin Media to illegitimise the device as with the previous 2 devices.

As above first time modem equates to piece of junk.

I knew that you were joking but not quite the same as the OP's original agent lying through his teeth in order to get him off the phone.

Why dream about a lie when we should be looking for them to buy a device directly of the shelf with no Virgin Media inspired firmware on the device and with decent wireless capabilities or just a standalone device.

Remember inbuilt modems are very different to standalone modems as they have to work by themselves as not as part of an integrated unit.

Re: new Hub to be released?

Whilst I agree with Peter that VM should take on a COTS device and not ponce about with vain exteriors and stupid formware, I'd just like to point out that a gateway is an integrated unit that has an inbuilt modem, an inbuilt router and an inbuilt switch.

It's just this piece of junk, the Super Hub, that VM have got entirely wrong in its craving to shave cost. VM are indeed paying the price for that. "Super Hub" is the oxynoron, not paying the price for shaving the cost (or is that a non-aphorism?).
