But the ref did and booked Scholes, and if you had seen the passage of play you would have seen that it was a genuine attempt to get the ball which had been flicked up, the Villa player quickly accepted the instant apology from Scholes as well.
PS, the angle of the phantom goal makes it look almost over the line but if it was possible to move the camera in line with the goal line then the whole of the ball did not cross the line.

That image of the ball crossing the line might be the result of a Parallax error.

Re: Football Season 2011/12
IF, people watch the TV replay, IT clearly shows the ball did NOT cross the line, therefore NO GOAL.
The officials are pathetic and a disgrace to the national game, what are the FA doing absolutely nothing, we need technology NOW, not next year of 2014.
We have diving, serious fouls and goals that are not given, this argument has been going on since the game with Man Utd v Spurs, does everyone remember the 'goal' where the ball was TWO FEET over the line, and Clattenberg or his lino did not see it when the United keeper threw the ball out of the goal.
Officials are run by a company and they are supplied to the FA and PL, and don't give a damn, Scholes should have been given a red card for his foul in that game, Cech should have received a red card for bringing down Abebayor, whether or not the ball went into the net.
I was a referee and would have shown it, Cech was not even booked for bringing him down, and for people who say he shouldn't have done, then they are wrong, l have seen many keepers sent off for offences like that.
Rules of the game state that the opposite player is the LAST man, who is brought down on route to goal and is brought down, then this is a RED CARD under Association rules.

Quotes from todays Telegraph.
"I though it hit me and stayed out" John Terry.
"It wasn't a goal-its as simple as that" Frank Lampard.

On the TV there is a point where the ball is out of sight and it seems to rebound off a player on the line but it's possible it crossed the line in that brief moment.

yes, it was a good article.
But i disagree with one point. It is not only up to the player to stop..managers have got to be honest. That was a blatant dive, Sir Alex has got to occasionally stop defending the indefensible. All that does is make the player think the manager wants him to keep doing that...which may well be what his manager wants

Re: Football Season 2011/12
I could start a new thread on this subject, BUT, the main problem today is that officials have left it far too late to change what players habits are.
We have divers in the box, we have foul tackles that can break players careers, and we have goal line clearances, this is part of football.
But many years ago we had tough officials, who would not mess about with players, no matter who they were, if they deserved to be sent off they would go.
At the weekend l have seen diving, serious fouls and balls that have supposed to have crossed the line, what is needed is we have to have another referee sitting in the ground in front of a Tv screen, who can tell the referee in seconds what is happening, Its like the disgraceful behaviour of Niel Lennon of Celtic having a go at the referee, after walking on the pitch.
The FA and SFA have got to get tough with players and clubs before, players will think that they are god and can get away with it. At the moment it is farcical, l gave up being a ref, due to the fact that players and clubs think they can get away with it.

Just how many years ago are you talking about Arthur.
I can remember when Man City last had a decent side, it was a common headline at the time, 'Lee Won Pen' referring to Franny Lees penchant for diving.
And anyone who saw Norman Hunter at Leeds ( and most of the Leeds side at the time TBH ), 'Chopper Harris at Chelski and many others, the tackling 'many years ago' was far worse overall than it is today. The speed of the modern game often makes tackles and alleged 'dives' seem far worse than they actually are a lot of the time.
Downright dirty, dangerous tackling was far worse 'many years ago'.
Jim.

Regarding the diving, as I recall, in the 70s it was customary for tackled players to roll over about 5 times after going to ground, in a bid to make the tackle look worse. The theatrics are of all times, it's just the form they take that changes.

Re: Football Season 2011/12
I packed up being a ref three years ago, l was fed up to the teeth with players over reacting and the County FA and FA would not clamp down on players, although some refs are tough, they have to be tougher and, supported by the FA.

It could learn from Rugby Union - only have the captain allowed to talk to the referee & ref having the power to move free kicks 10 feet onwards if there is dissent. How about a 10 minute sin-bin for abusive language followed by red card if repeated?
