I am absolutely sick and tired of the elf'n'safety set banging on about how we all need to be treated like children, or morons, or both. Official advice aimed at adults should be pitched at sensible adults who are in control of their faculties and who have a reasonably developed level of common sense.
Tim, I have no doubt you've seen some horrendous stuff when dealing with the consequences of flammable liquids not being kept properly, but the thing is, all you're seeing is the aftermath of occasions when it went wrong. Many, many more people manage to keep petrol at home without setting fire to themselves in their own kitchens. I've been storing it for the best part of the last decade since getting myself a petrol mower. I've never so much as singed an eyebrow with it.
The woman in this case has no doubt stood next to a sign reading PETROLEUM SPIRIT, HIGHLY INFLAMMABLE, NO SMOKING, SWITCH OFF ENGINE and other assorted warnings against naked flames and use of mobile phones, just about every week of her adult life while filling the tank of her own car. If she has somehow not absorbed the safety message over all that time then frankly there is nothing that Francis Maude could have said or done, or failed to say or do, that would have prevented her doing herself an injury, if not now then at some point in the future.
Some people simply do not have the sense they were born with and I don't see why I should be spoken to like an idiot on their account.
|
Well the lady in York has just proved that people do need treating like children. As Well as the fact that some people seem to think it is quite safe to store fuel.
Unfortunately fires do happen. And when they do, then a gallon of petrol can make a huge difference to someone living or dying.
Your attitude sounds like you think that people with limited intelligence shouldn't receive any advice on their level.
I have come across some very intelligent people, who can be completely stupid when it comes to common sense.
Then there are the so called intelligent people who think it will never happen to them...well believe me, it can, and often does.
On more than one occasion I have been to incidents where people who have stored petrol, or other flamable materials all of their life, without any problem....until the first time. And at least one of them will never get the chance again!!!

You have made it quite clear that you think that the advice given by the fire service doesn't apply to you.

Re: [Update] Fuel tanker drivers vote to strike
What should we do about people who take the batteries out of their smoke alarms to stop them making a noise or those who refuse to war seatbelts? Have they been told to do it by some government spokesperson or are they just idiots oblivious to all the advice and warnings going on around them? Sorry, but there are some people you just can't educate and treating the rest of the population like idiots isn't going to change that.

Re: [Update] Fuel tanker drivers vote to strike
Could someone explain how 'keep a jerrycan in the garage' can be converted, even by the meanest of intelligences, to 'it's OK to pour petrol one foot from a naked flame in the kitchen'?
Does that mean the advice to 'wrap your child up to keep them warm' will be converted into 'please smother your child with a blanket wrapped tightly around their head'?

No, the lady in York has proved that some people are idiots who cannot be saved from themselves. She has not made a convincing case for treating the rest of the adult population like brainless morons.
Our great grandparents would despair at the level of molly-coddling and hand-holding our society takes for granted.

Probably.
Cue the next tranche of defective morons (not to mention those cynically using their plight for political point scoring) blaming someone else for their utter stupidity....

Re: [Update] Fuel tanker drivers vote to strike
Well folks as suspected Mr Spence the person behind the 2000 blockade will link up with this dispute and cripple the country.

An alliance has been formed between Unite union tanker drivers, whose grievance is mainly over terms and safety issues, and the resurgent Fuel Lobby whose supporters are furious about rocketing fuel prices.
|
Quote:
Last night Mr Spence, of Consett, Co Durham told the Sunday Express: “We are a lot better coordinated than we were in 2000.
“The mood among our supporters is to stand by the tanker drivers and bring the country to a standstill. There will be a domino effect. This time we will bring the Government down.
“We already have up to 4,000 drivers willing to support the Unite strike.
“This is the last resort because no one is listening and the price of fuel is going up. Hauliers are going bust. The average tractor uses £200 of diesel a day and farmers cannot afford any more increases.”

Perhaps we could have health & safety shops staffed by experts on every high street, informing shoppers and passers by of the perils of carrying heavy shopping, the serious dangers of bending down to tie shoe laces and the need to risk assess bus stops and surrounding areas before alighting..... lol
