Then add the money for The presenter and The judges and it is even more money wasted.
That money could be have been a lot better spent.

Yes l have to agree with you as l am fed up with these talent shows and would much rather watch a Science fiction series or a good drama series then watching a bunch of wanabees celebritys flouncing around all the time.

Yes you are getting me started now as there has not been a decent chat show since Parky in my mind and as for cooking shows they need to go back to basics to learn some people of how to cook properly before they start to become more extravagant in their cooking.

I have already said why 2 channels will not close on 1st January 2012
The only channel that is closing for sure is Sky Living Loves on Tuesday 24th January 2012.
Sky Livingit +1 might also close on Tuesday 24th January 2012 or it might not.
Current TV might also close or it might not.
We will have to wait and see.

We've established that World News is commercially operated already, so no change there, and that the target audience for World Service is outside the realm of the licence payer, so there are a few options available to reduce costs and source funding from elsewhere:-
- Merge World News and World Service and have them both commercially funded. There would be significant savings to be made anyway by merging.
- Make World Service an internet only broadcaster and do away with the cost of running and maintaining their transmission facilities and satellite leases. You would make a fortune selling off the vast transmitter sites. You could feed a third world country with the crops grown on the land if it were converted to agriculture.

So, you're agreeing that the BBC should be "more autonomous and more business-like" but suggesting that it should have limitless, self-determined public funding with no supervisory body controlling the funding or overseeing how it is spent. Er, no thanks! Anyway, those are contradictory stances. Running an operation on the basis of limitless, self-determined public funding is not being "more autonomous and more business-like".

Er, you do realise that I was joking, don't you?
Nothing is closing on 1st January 2012, not because it is a Sunday but because the OP was referring to January 2011 (unless I too have become confused as that was a Saturday ).

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.
What I love about Virgin's TiVo offering is that it allows you to cut through the dross which ALL channels show in amongst the few nuggets of real quality. When I had Sky I had thousands of channels but never anything to watch, now I have fewer channels but am never stuck.
This is also how I feel about (what I consider to be the excellent) IPlayer app on TiVo - it allows me to cut through a lot of the rubbish that the BBC produces and find some really excellent television. And lets be fair, the BBC does make some really excellent television.
However, whilst I can accept that TiVo is a great tool for sorting through the rubbish churned out by commercial channels, I find it hard to reconcile the need for a tool to sort through the rubbish produced by the BBC. There shouldn't be any!
I don't really have an opinion about the future of the licence fee or who should control it. What I do know is that you'd struggle to find a pay TV option for about a tenner a month with 5 SD channels, 2 HD channels and an enormous on demand library - factor in the radio channels and it really is superb value for money. But what I do have an opinion about is quantity over quality, and in future I'd really like to see less, not more from the BBC because, as Felim quite rightly points out, they really are now paying the price for trying to compete with some of the trash served up elsewhere. And thats a shame.
On a slightly different note, my wife is up in arms about one of the, admittedly unconfirmed, suggestions on here that we might lose E! at some point in 2012 and wants to know who to email

Yeah, sorry all, got a bit carried away! I'll be real good from now on!
Anyway, the point is that we would like more channels but better quality from the existing channels would be an improvement.
BTW, I demand a recount of MB's top posters of 2011 as I believe I've moved up a few places in the table (but perhaps not in a good way)!
*unrequested (by which Hugh meant "unsolicited") but not unrequited.

l don't think there is much chance of this channel being taken off Virgin in 2012.
