Honestly dude, I know you don't think it is atm, but it is a blessing in disguise. I think VM should supply the equipment which allows you to connect to their services (modem in this case) but i hate the idea of them forcing other hardware on you which you should be able to choose yourself. The way technology is going these days with all the devices that can hook up to lans and the internet, routing and switching to handle and manage the traffic is key and you should have a device which is suitable for your needs, bearing in mind that everyone's needs are different. I think it is wrong of VM to force equipment on you, especially when it doesn't work. You should have the choice and freedom to use whatever you want. The only reason why they have done it is to standardise the CPE so they can support it because I imagine most of the calls they get regarding connection issues aren't due to faults their end but more to do with the routers which people are using and they can't support every type of router out there.
Anyways, buying your own router is going to guarantee you quality and reliability; you are buying something that you know is going to work. Putting the hub in modem mode means that all it is doing is making you connection to the internet and if you do have connection probs then they are easy to identify and VM to fix.
