Basque Separatists Declare Halt to Violence
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/21/wo...ce.html?emc=na
Quote:
After nearly half a century of violence in its struggle for independence in the traditional Basque homeland in Spain and France, the separatist group ETA declared a unilateral end to its campaign of bombings and shootings on Thursday, saying it wished to seize a “historical opportunity to reach a just and democratic resolution” of the conflict.

Let us hope that this time it is the final ceasefire and it will stick.

In other words, do what we want or we'll start up again. It's still terrorism. Have they said that they have seen the error of their ways and are they going to disband?
Terrorists don't commit a violent act(bombing etc) and then say there won't be another occurrence, but give us what we want. If they did that, people could just ignore them. Terrorism is always about the future threat. Past acts are just to demonstrate that they mean it.

Re: Basque Separatists Declare Halt to Violence
In fairness, people were equally dubious of the IRA's ceasefire.

What concessions have the IRA made? Even prior to the 'Good Friday agreement vote', they were insisting that people had to vote 'yes' in order for there to be peace. Eg A mugger hits you and then says give me your money, if you don't want to be hit again. You then hand over your money. Did you hand it over voluntarily or were you still mugged?
Do you honestly think that the 'Real IRA' is a completely new organisation, made up from people who had nothing to do with the IRA.

Re: Basque Separatists Declare Halt to Violence
We don't know what concessions have been made but the truth is N Ireland is by and large a lot safer than it was, and if the IRA had a full list of demands met by the government then all kinds of splinter groups would have taken over their position by now - and they haven't.

Agreed.

Actually several have. Admittedly they are currently nowhere near as active as their predecessors were but they certainly have "taken over their position" per se and reports have suggested that their support base appears to be increasing - more's the pity.
The reality is that an awful lot of their activities go unreported.
