Toshiba Laptop Injures a mans hand
Watching DVDs may be bad for your health - specially if the drive on your laptop decides to shoot you.
William Warner suffered horrendous hand injuries after his notebook spat out a sharp sliver of metal that pierced his palm, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Re: Toshiba Laptop Injures a mans hand
I think the story is BS.
I've heard of c
CDs/DVDs supposedly exploding, Mythbusters did a bit on this I'll try and find a link.

Re: Toshiba Laptop Injures a mans hand
Nothing to do with exploding CD but instead it's a part of the drive itself.. I've had to repair drives that had loose parts for many different brand of laptops (Toshiba, Acer, IBM, Compaq, HP..etc..) and if the loose part comes into contact with the spinning disk then it could theoretically shoot out the plastic side of the case. If your hands there at the time then yes it could impale you.

I remember when a CD would crash and you'd have to open the drive with a paperclip and it would shoot out at high speed.

"RizzyKings got it in for Toshiba now. i heard the story unfolded after he wasn't able to obtain his free upgrade" Lol not had or have it in for them sorted it today and all sorted now and it wasn't any fault of toshiba more the retailor we bought the laptop from. Good job wifey doesn't bother with cd\dvd's so don't have to worry about this ever happening although it's the first time i have heard of someone being injured in this way but have experienced what Kymmy is saying.

Re: Toshiba Laptop Injures a mans hand
That's a drive side rail from a laptop CD drive. It's unpowered and acts as an extension to the eject mech so it opens further. The ONLY way that impaled his hand is if the drive jammed while closing and he tried to force it closed at which point it will have jammed against the internal rail in the drive casing and ended up punching through the plastic and into his hand. It also locates BELOW the level of the disc at which point disc contact wouldn't have been possible (Also for the reason the disc spins clockwise and that rail would be the one at the point in the disc that if contact occurred it would push it to the back of the drive and not outwards) Therefore I call shenanigans.

Re: Toshiba Laptop Injures a mans hand
I once had a dell laptop go up in flames on my knees, but this was due to the faulty power supplies iirc Bloody scary though!
