Question Tivo - Have I been palmed off?

Hello folks,

Was wondering if I could ask you guys for some objective advice.

I have had a 500gb tivo box since May. I'm delighted with the versitility of the box. Remote record, the larger hard drive, you-tube etc have all been a bit of a boon.

My main problem is its technical faults. I have spoken to VM cs about them and they have assured me that they are normal and will be addressed an a major box update in September.

I'm a bit skeptical however, that they are "normal" and I'm a little worried that my box is, well, a bit of a duff......

1) I have to reset once every 2-3 days, due to freeze ups.
2) Every few hours, my picture will flash, I'll get a screen of static and then I'll get the dreaded HDMI not detected message and no sound. I then have to switch my telly off and then on and change channel on the tivo for sound to reappear. This drives me mad.
3) EPG is not linking to catch up properly (although I think this is a general problem).
4) Sometimes when I go to my recordings, the red circle comes up and stays there for up to 5 mins.

I'm not one of life's complainers, but I think its a bit much for them to say that its a software rather than a hardware issue and there is nothing they can do for me until September.

They did give me a £10 credit for which I thank them, but do you agree with their position? Should I just wait until the update or demand a new box?

Looking through your 4 main points I would say yes, yuo definately have a virginmedia Tivo running as expected.

1 and 2 are definitely not normal 3) depends on the catchup really and 4) 5 minutes is extremely long most a see is maybe 30 seconds. Normally don't see the red circle at all.

Your comments, as always, are up to your usual helpful standard.

Meanwhile, back to the OP.

1 and 2, definitely not right.

3 and 4, have been reported by others (I haven't seen them, but others on this forum have).

You need to call VM to report a fault.

Cheers for your help all - looks like i'll have to get back on the phone.

Before I do though. The problem with the catch-up tv is that when I go back on the epg and find a program with a catch up icon, when I select it, it simply takes me to the catch up main menu, rather than a program itself. Is this an issue a new box would fix?

Secondly, was the guy spinning me a yarn about there being a major update in the middle of Sept that will fix everything, or is this true?

Thats what I meant by depends on the catchup, some programs go straight to the show and some take you to the catchup menu. I'm finding less and less programs that just drop me in the catchup menu, so it is improving. I doubt a new box would fix that.

There is a major update being prepared, not sure when it will be ready though. Could be September.

Regards

John.
