White Screen of Death on Windows 7 Pro

For some time now ive been getting odd White Screen of Deaths.

The system will freeze and become unresponsive yet if im watching a video i can still hear the sound in the back and then a white screen will appear and yet i can still hear the sound.

I Have noticed one thing tho it does only seem to happen if i am watching a video wheather its from a file on the PC or from a DVD.

I have tried unplugging all USBs except keyboard and mouse, tried unplugging all drives except the master drive, i have even reinstalled windows on another drive and used all the latest drivers and STILL every now and then wollup for no reason, ive had two today now in the matter of around an hour and whats irritating is nothing shows up in the event viewer.

Ive also tried different players, DIVX player, Windows Media Player and also VLC player.

Anyone help me with this its driving me insane.

I am looking on google and seems to be a common fault on vista and 7 yet am yet to find a fix or what is the cause.

An uber simplistic reply (because I have had a bit of the same) but have you tried refreshing the page? - it worked for me.

perhaps try installing a new codec pack?

i dont think its a codec pack and refreshing the page isnt gonna work.

The reason i dont think its a codec issue is before i reinstalled i was running the Klite codec pack now im just running DIVX and Fddshow and thats it.

fddshow is the primary divx codec in Klite

Can I suggest you remove all codec packs first and then install the divx pack.. Just that to me it sound like one of two things..

1# Codec
2# DirectX/GFX drivers. (either roll forward or back on your vid card drivers)

FFDshow is a collection of decompressers that you can enable or disable according to your needs. If you just want to watch movies it is probably all you need. I have it installed and find it inocuous.

However if you have the xvid codec installed then do disable the xvid librecodec in FFDshow to avoid a potential conflict. This also applies to any other discreet codecs you may have applied.

Ideally, don't use codec packs. Install discreet codecs as and when you need them.

Divx player is a known resource hog, IMO get rid of it.

Sounds like it's nothing to do with the codecs but rather you have a broken graphics card (or broken graphics card drivers).

What's your GPU?

the error has reoccured after weeks and weeks of nothing....

ive had 3 white screens of death in 2 days and im getting this showing up in the event log...

audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0

Now i know its not a hardware error as when it started a few months ago i tested everything and nothing has been changed and all passed and if it was hardware why did the error suddenly go away and then reoccur its so weird.

Im wondering if something has changed behind the scenes in windows settings.

Maybe a Windows update has replaced your video card drivers with WDM ones?
What Graphics card do you have mate?
Ah Just read your specs. " 1GB ATI 4670HD PCI-E 16x"

I dont suppose you have a different video card you can try? sounds like a driver issue or a faulty card
