To be fair, they didn't have to do much.....

True, but those Softmodems/Winmodems were a nightmare

Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Freeserve was the first, then BT, switched to NTL afterwards after BT said we was using the internet too much.

Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
it's called the V.Everything because it supported everything, in fact the only thing it doesn't support that came out since then is the V.92 protocol. Security including ringback security - no problem. it's a hell of a piece of kit. The saying was 'If a Courier modem can't connect, it's not the Courier's fault' They also supported upwards speed negotiation. If they retrained on the line then they would seek the fastest stable speed. Most modems only retrained downwards. Amazon still list them between 192 and 322.

globalnet dial up 1997 -1998, freeserve dial up 1998 - 2000, then Blueyonder 2001 - present, was the first broadband I had, 512k... That blew me away at the time...

Think before then, Think V22bis and earlier.
Prior to the internet there was FIDOnet, bulletin boards with dialup access using FrontDoor as a gateway to RemoteAccess Bulletin Board Systems. and X00.sys - Ray Gwinn's Double Aught Buckshot driver to give DOS access to more than 2 serial ports, BlueWave Offline Message reader for emails etc.

Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
I started on Enterprise (based on the Isle of Man) and had a local PoP 0845 number. They are still going now and they offered a fantastic service. I then moved over to BT <spit> as they brought in an 0800 number for dialling up.
They were promptly sacked when they got rid of the 0800 number and / or brought caps in so it was off to ntl: for me after that.

Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
My first ISP was the original 'tenner a month' guys at Demon in 1994.
They charged 10 quid a month for a static IP dial-up service where the customer had to pay for the BT calls.
I remember having to dial-in to their BBS to download bits of software which allowed me to run the connection - words like Trumpet windsock still send shivers down my spine.
MS DOS 6, then Windows 3.1, floppy discs - those were the days!
