Multi room TV

This is a slight twist on some older threads

I have a Pace SD box which drives the TV (which is actually HD) through the TV Scart and I use the TV RF into a booster to drive a 4 way splitter into 4 Tvs elsewhere in the house. Works perfectly with very good picture and sound quality even if all 5 TVs used. This set up was actually done by NTL.

VM have offered me the Tivo box and the opportunity to use my other Scientific Research V+ box in place of the Pace SD box. As reported on other threads the TV scart and TV RF are disabled completely and so I tested the VCR scart into a Mercury scart to RF modulator into the booster etc. It does work on Channel 52 but the picture quality is very poor although sound is as good as ever.

Can anybody tell me how to overcome the picture degradation? I need to do this before switching to the Tivo. Thanks

Re: Multi room TV

Firstly, you have retuned your TVs, haven't you? If they doesn't help, try using various other RF channels from the modulator. Channel 52 may be clashing with a local TV transmitter. (If you can say what town you are in, I can maybe give recommended channels for your area). Out of interest, do you have an aerial connected to the aerial-in socket of the STB?

If all else fails, use the V+ in SD mode as a direct replacement for the Pace box.

ps. Welcome to the forum!

Re: Multi room TV

Thanks spiderplant

Yes I have retuned all of the TVs and I also tried channels 36 and 21 where the picture was much worse. I am in Romsey Hampshire and I have no aerial connected.

I have not tried the V+ in SD mode as it seems a waste and i have not made the tivo switch decision yet. I am disappointed as I moved several years ago from Sky to NTL/Virgin only as I could keep the set up and I have everything with VM now

Thanks

Re: Multi room TV

Channels 53, 55 and 65 are recommended in your area. Try each of those.

Or perhaps the modulator is just plain faulty. Try connecting it direct to a single TV and see what the picture's like.

Re: Multi room TV

With the new V+ Box and Tivo the scarts both work while watching tv in HDMI mode, they even show the epg.

My set up is:
TIVO - HDMI Direct into TV
Scart into Old VCR ( am looking to change to a DVD recorder in the near future as the picture quality will be better) RF Out of the VCR to the TV upstairs via rf cable

I use a Marmitek VideoControl3 remote control extender set that sits at either end of the RF cable (One into the back on the TV upstairs and one into the output of the Video player)

And hey presto I have TIVO working upstairs with full remote capability.

Just thought you guys might like to know.

Take care.

Re: Multi room TV

Hi,

I've seen a few conflicting answers to this question on various threads so just trying to see what the current story is

I curently have Sky+ and have my RF2 hooked up to a splitter which feeds 3 other TV's in the house and with 'Magic Eye' can use the remote control from any TV in the house.

Due to the company I work for I can get the 'VM Mates Rates' deal and am keen to swith my TV over to VM (already have BB with them), however I want to know if I would be able to hook my V+ box up to allow my multi room to work?

I've seen it said that some VM boxes dont have an RF out, where as some do, and some people suggest using a Scart to RF converter to feed the remote TV's where as others have said that you dont get the EPG on the remote TV if you do this and I've also seen it said that if you connect the box via HDMI, then the RF out is disabled.

Peterbu says in this thread that the 'New' V+ box will still send a signal via the scart with EPG when viewing the box via HDMI - if I move my TV to VM, what are my chances of getting one of the 'NEW' boxes? and even if I do, is it possible to use the remote control from the the secondary TV's?

Basically after any advice as to how I can replicate my current Sky set up if I move to VM, what I will need to buy extra (Remote Extender??) and what my liklyhood of getting a box capable of doing this anyway actaully is....

On a completly seperate note - If TIVO is an extra £3 per month on top of your current package, does this hold true with Mates Rates too? - could I sacrafice my second V Box and get a V+ & Tivo for Mates Rates + £3 Per month (obviously I realise I would have to pay the Tivo up front cost).

Many thanks to anyone that can give me a definative answer to any of this!!

Re: Multi room TV

The chances of you getting a new box are pretty high, I had my system working on the new type of V+ Box (the Samsung type) and it also works on a Tivo, you need a marmitek system as I showed in the above post and simply put the HDMI from the box into your TV, then scart from the box into a Video / DVD Recorder and then the RF out. Connect everything up and you will have full functionality from your other TV.

Cheers
Pete

Re: Multi room TV

I hate these threads..

Someone has a problem and asks for help, other users offer "possible" solutions and work arounds but the thread starter never lets us know if anything worked.

Then you get a duplicate thread because no solution was ever confirmed. AHH.

Re: Multi room TV

Hi Pete, thanks for the reply.

Does anyone have an opinion of if digisenders would be any better/worse than running remote extenders over the existing co-ax cable?

Can any installers in the Nottingham area let me know if u currenly seem to be installing these newer boxes, or if i'd likly end up with an old reconditioned one and therefore have the HDMI problem........

Also - anyone know about if mates rates + £3 is possible for a Tivo box

Thanks

Talking Re: Multi room TV

Hi I have finally done this i.e. take the Tivo box and move my V+ box to replace my SD box which drove a co axial network of 3 SD TVs with a booster. This was what happened

1. Coax output on the V+ was disabled and VM would not reinstate it even though Comtel had set up my coax netwrork originally
2. I tested the scart out put on the V+ box directly into both an HD and SD TV and both worked (in SD)
3. I tested the scart lead in and scart lead out to the same TVs through the Mercury modulator (channel not relevant as scart output is pass through - worked fine with a better picture and sound from the VM sd box.
4. Connected the coax network to the TV out port on the Mercury modulator
5. I had to search for the correct channel as 4 positions gave me sound and vision but channel 52 worked for me. Again the picture and sound (in SD) are better than through the original VM SD box. I did not need to retune the SD TVs but this may have happened automatically
6. I have not put the Marmitek Powermid XL in yet as I rarely need to change channel and i can walk from my office to the room downstairs where the V+ box is.

I hope this is useful
