I have just discovered that...

this forum is quite difficult to read, since there is so much "noise" in the threads. I just joined and thought this thread would have some good tips to help me with my new TiVo, but out of 50-odd posts I think there are really only 3 or 4 posts "on topic" here. Is that usual?

Not having a go or anything, it's just an observation from a n00b.

Thanks! I do see there are moderators here, so that's something I suppose. Looks like they have their work cut out for them though

Re: I have just discovered that...

(Thought I'd post this here as I have just discovered something too!)

My internet just went off for a short while and it took my Tivo's network connection with it.

It was only off for around 5 mins but it did allow me to discover something interesting that I did not realise; which would also explain why the Tivo is so slow to update some pages like "My Shows".

I had assumed that all the graphics, etc., were stored locally, but they're not

The details and pic that appear on the right when you highlight a programme would not display whilst the network connection was not available. Even more suprising was that, with no network connection, you cannot use the 'OK' button to bring up the full 'programme details' page!

Or is this old news to most people and I'm just being my usual slow self?

Re: I have just discovered that...

I haven't much; this is only like the third time or something. It was just interesting to note that things aren't how I thought they were; and possibly why the Tivo is so slow sometimes.

I'll bet all the "browse" pictures are also server-side. Which kinda makes sense as they couldn't store them all locally I suppose

Engadget's review of the TiVo Premiere mentioned that the software doesn't cache anything and when moving from page to page, TiVo has to reload all images:

Quote:
TiVo says the Premiere doesn't cache images in memory in order to keep RAM usage down, but that doesn't make it any easier to deal with -- besides, RAM's cheap and this entire interface needs to be loaded up and ready to go at all times. Even the first-level menus load in slowly, and they're an entirely local affair -- there's no reason for the same six options under "Find TV, movies, and videos" to take a second to appear every time you select it. It gets worse when you actually try and use the new browse features; not only do the icons and content take measurable amounts of time to load in, the discovery bar reloads itself every time you drill down a level to present more context-sensitive info, so it really feels like the whole UI is blanking out with each click.
