And the final chapter closes with the death of Claude Choules
Quote:
The world's last known combat veteran of World War I, Claude Choules, has died in Australia aged 110.
Known to his comrades as Chuckles, British-born Mr Choules joined the Royal Navy at 15 and went on to serve on HMS Revenge.
He moved to Australia in the 1920s and served in the military until 1956

Re: The last one :( - RIP to all who fought in the Great War
For The Fallen
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.
But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
(Laurence Binyon)

Re: The last one :( - RIP to all who fought in the Great War
RIP
I look forward to the day when we have no veterans from any war to remember with pride because we have grown up enough to resolve issues without fighting.

WWI was not really about good verses evil it was more about politics and power. What happened directly after WWI with the fleecing of Germany and the weakening of the country led the way for the evilest of evil men to gain power though
RIP give Feild Marshall Hage a good smack in the mouth for the Somme

Quote:
Claude Choules was the last known surviving combat veteran of the Great War, and served in both the world wars of the 20th Century.
Born in Pershore, Worcestershire in 1901, he tried to sign up for the army at the beginning of World War I but he was too young.
Two years later, at the age of 15, he joined the Royal Navy serving on board the training ship HMS Impregnable based at Devonport.
|
Quote:
His main task on the Revenge was to help lower the seaplanes into the water which were used to fight the threat of German Zeppelins.
It was while on board the Revenge that Choules witnessed the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet in November 1918 in the Firth of Forth.
He remained with the Revenge as part of the escort which accompanied the German fleet to Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands and, six months later, watched as the interned German crews scuttled their ships.
|
What a fascinating man .He tried to join up at age 13 ,was signed up at age 15 and retired after 40yrs in uniform serving both the British navy and Royal Australian navy and later the regular Australian navy
RIP
