Virgin was my only real hope of getting decent speeds and today they took that privilege away from me. I have been very happy with my service until today (apart from the p2p management affecting games, another story)
I really hope this doesnt happen again, for virgins sake

Seems to me Craig you need to start the ball rolling and get your BT landline re enabled, why don't you get ADSL BB and downgrade from 50Mbps to 10, and have 2 services to flick between.
I'm a big gamer and have been at the wrong end of issues for far too long with Virgin so trying to live with ADSL currently giving me 3.5Mbps down isn't fantastic but the jitter is very good in comparison so in some respects worth the trade off.
Currently I'm running the 2 providers side by side (Vm vs Sky) for a month and I have to say it's a close call, when you've had good speed it's hard to go back to what seems like dial up in comparison but it all depends what you do with your bandwidth, for gaming virgin aren't always the best (unless your in a low uptake area) due to the bursty nature of the their BB, which I cant see getting better any time soon especially once 100Mbps is rolled out nation wide.

Re: Broadband Usage On 29-04-2011 Royal Wedding
Given I am unlikely to have VM installed by Friday as I'm still waiting for the construction to be done I am unlikely to have any impact on the VM network so will be doing very little due to my current temporary wireless service's restrictions.

Re: Broadband Usage On 29-04-2011 Royal Wedding
some confusion.
I see the gov's website says friday is the extra bank holiday.
the PDF document of my council's website for school holidays shows 2nd may as a normal bank holiday, 3rd extra for wedding O_o and 29th april as a normal day. I am assuming my council have ball'sed up as the 29th is national?
--edit--
Read another page giving their reasons, they just treating the 3rd as a a bank holiday for schools as they felt it was unfair the 29th fell in the normal half term, softies.

29th is at the employer's discretion.

If you're looking for a major slowdown like during 'that' England world cup match last summer, I don't think you'll see it for this event.
Even then, it was only BT's network that chugged and had them rate limit all their circuits at BRAS level (my two were limited to 2meg (from 8) for ~2hrs) with Plusnet also shoving their network into 'Disaster' mode - that was a shambles :-)

I think I remember when BT capped everyone on infinity to 2mbit, whilst embarrassing for them if it was to avoid congestion then it was a good move.

i think it was more to prevent a meltdown more than prevent congestion
remember that BT advert with the guy off my family. "come round to my place guys", then the voiceover said "you dont have to worry about slow downs with BT, and you dont need ot make exceuses for your connection"
LOL

Apart from that it was actually an Openreach fault and not intentional. Line profiling went a bit Pete Tong and throttled many users across multiple ISPs to 1.75Mbps.

I was planning to go into maximum grinding download mode. Open 1000 simultaneous connections, upload and download maxxed out. Hopefully shame VM into upgrading their network. As it happens I don't think I need bother, VM seem to be incapable of coping with evening YouTube or iPlayer use so tomorrow should cripple them without any help from me.

I am not too surprised, I dont know many young people bothered about this, my parents are of course but their generation will usually watch something like this on a normal tv.
