Just had our TIVO box installed today. Very nice young man fitted it and so far all seems fine with it. SD picture is as good as it was on the V+ box, not 'soft' as some people have said. Still playing with it so haven't really got anything else to say at the moment.

However one thing I would mention to anyone else who is keeping their V+ box and moving it to another room, make sure you ask them to bring along an HDMI cable or buy one. We had our old Samsung box replaced with our V+ box, but have no picture as apparently it's set to only work with an HDMI cable, so now have to go out and buy one and hope that it works

Personally I never really saw the point of reminders on the V+ (and was always getting irritated when I accidentally got the Set Reminder screen up and had to get out of it again ).

I always thought one of the points to a PVR was to put control of your viewing habits into your own hand, and to (start to) take control away from the broadcasters schedules. Easy solution is to simply record everything (as others have said), watch the recording 'as live' and remove it afterwards. That way you can watch it when your ready to watch it, not when the broadcaster says you should watch it.

In the example of the 6 O Clock news, if your not ready (for whatever reason) until 6:01 then it becomes the 6:01 news, or the 6:02 news etc - its at your control (all we need is the time machine and we can have the 5:59 news option!).

In the example of the cricket, if you miss the first few overs, just watch the recording from the beginning, and if theres a break in play, fast forward to catch up - its only a problem if you have an alternative live feed available as the scores won't match.

At the end of the day though, its a case of Each to their Own - everyone has their own preferences.

So what about shows that have live phone-ins for competitions, voting or shopping? Phone lines often close after the program has finished.

I've never used reminders, ever. But it doesn't take much imagination to see how useful they can be to a lot of people.

Don't spend much on the HDMI lead. They are very cheap on eBay and fairly cheap in any of the major supermarkets. They perform just as good as one costing much more.

No you're not. Just set it to record instead

Watching live TV completely negates the need for a DVR. Why spend £150-200 on something that you don't need if you still want to sit down when the schedulers tell you that "Corrie" is on

The fastest way to stop playback does seem to be to press the TV button, otherwise if you back out to the intermediate menu, you have to also back out of that menu before it'll stop (( I can only assume this is a bug as I wouldn't expect many people would want to peruse extra options in the middle of a programme, whicle watching it PiP).

If you made it close to the end of the prog. though (I think its in the last 5 mins) it jumps straight to a Delete/Keep screen).

Cricket is boring enough without watching a recording of it.

As these boxes won't be able to record, I would assume that there will be a 'remind me' option in place of the 'record' function.

Thanks, there is a post earlier indicating this is on the issues list with Tivo. So just use workaround like press TV as you say until there is a more straight forward way to end something you are watching and decide to stop mid way through.

You know that BGT is on at, say, 7:40pm. So you set it to record. You can then start watching the show, at 7:41 if you like, but I'd suggest 7:50pm when you can still take part in the voting but can still skips at least some ads

At least you won't miss the start like you would if you had only set a reminder but had then been distracted by - for example - a phone call, or someone at the door. What good has the reminder done you then 'cos you'd've completely missed the first 20 mins or whatever.
