Hi Muppetman,

Yes! I think it's a good piece of kit. To me the main attraction is the large hard drive and the three tuners. I have tested using all three tuners to record in HD and at the same time watch a recorded HD programme. No problem. I have set up quite a few series links and so far so good.

The issue with poor SD Picture quality continues elsewhere but I have to say that I find my Tivo / Sharp 32" LED TV to be excellent in both HD & SD.

Others have complained about the remote being very directional. Again I have not found that to be the case. In fact my remote will work perfectly no matter where I point it and is one of the most sensitive and comfortable remotes I have ever handled.

The on screen interface is not as intuitive as I had expected. It has all the hallmarks of a mish mash of technologies cobbled together to produce "Virgin Media Powered by Tivo" some of which seem to be HD and some SD..

The big disappointment is the issue with the BBC resulting in the removal of all BBC content from the backward EPG. To access BBC VOD you have to use the BBC iPlayer which can be accessed via the red button or from the BBC iPlayer APP. Disappointing though this is, it can be explained by the actions of the BBC, which is outside the control of VM. However you would think that just as VM are going to market and promoting this feature heavily somebody would have got word from the BBC that they were pulling the plug.

There is no explanation why this seems to have resulted in ITV, Channel 4 and 5 not being available from EPG rewind. Even though they show up as being available in the EPG if you select them to play directly you are taken to the old VOD menu system to start searching all over again. We are led to believe that this may not be affecting all VM customer and the issue is being investigated. Calls to 151 on this matter get a vague response. One agent in Glasgow, who claimed to be Tivo support, didn't know what an EPG was.

In answer to your question. Yes! I love it and am not giving it back and am seriously considering going for the Baby Tivo, when it becomes available, to replace a V+ in the bedroom.

Bet you are sorry you asked now!

This is very much what I've found. My TiVo suggestions are still very much of the 'you must be joking' variety but I will persist with giving thumbs up and thumbs down to anything I come across in the hope that this will improve. My big gripe is that the menus become so slow they're almost painful to use when recordings are in progress. I'm hoping this is a bug and will be fixed with a software update in the near future rather than a fault with my box.

Glad you are all enjoying it , and good to hear the pros and cons fixerman , I'm still laughing at support not knowing what an EPG was.

This about sums it up for me. Cheers for that. I can't understand why some menus would be HD and some lower res. Weird.

If this new Tivo even gets close to the usability of the Thomson S1 unit I bought 10 years ago I'll be happy. To be honest, nothing I've used since including Sky +, VM V+ or many freeview recorders have come close.

Amazing to think things actually haven't moved on that much in a decade of software development. The only thing that has improved is the number of tuners and HDD space!

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

For all those wondering why some menus are still in SD, its because that is how TiVo is in the USA.

They have never changed over all the menus to be in HD. So unless they do it I doubt we shall see a fully HD TiVo menu system any time soon.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

At least you can use your HD menus with the VM TIVO , there's a few TIVO premiere users in this thread saying they've switched to SD menus for stability.

It's a shame we can't get 'Virgin' tuner cards to allow us to receive the channels in Media Centre or MediaPortal. All of these boxes seem a step back in technology in comparison

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

havign my tivo installed tomorrow - want to take up the free multi-room offer and have been waiting on the call all day. finally got one from virgin media but they hung up before I got to answer it. I called the number and it just says don't call us, we'll call you. Slightly worried now I have missed my chance on the offer. what do I do if they haven't called by the time the engineer comes tomorrow??
