Re: [Update] UN mandates military intervention in Libya
Apparently Gaddafi's announced a ceasefire.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12787739
Let's hope it's true and that a satisfactory non-violent solution to this problem can be found.

Re: [Update] UN mandates military intervention in Libya
dont see it happening to be honest... he'll surround Benghazi and probably tobruk and then attack when all forces are ready and then they'll be to close for ground attack planes to intervene.

Re: [Update] UN mandates military intervention in Libya
thing that I dont understand is that its the foreign minister coming out with the cease fire... you would've expected Khadaffi himself coming onto the airwaves

That would be because the RAF has Typhoons, whereas the French walked out on the project and built their own, home-grown but slightly less capable version they call Rafale.
The Typhoon is a world-class aerial combat aircraft of the kind it's detractors said we would never need post Cold War. But now we need something to fly to and fro over northern Libya to make Gaddafi think twice about sending his own planes into the air ... And to shoot them down if they fancy a go.

Definition of "the finest" from ARRSEpedia...

The RAF may be onto something though.
In the Army it is generally the commissioned officers who send the chaps to do most of the dirty work. In the navy the officers and the chaps have to do it together on a large floating Exocet target. The RAF is unique in that the chaps stay safe and dry in a nice, cosy bomb-proof hangar while the commissioned officers are shot down and given a ferocious beasting on Al Jazeera TV. Consequently, in order to maintain morale, many RAF officers' messes are equipped with miniature pool tables and Fruit Machines. Classy eh?
This seems only right and proper since the ground crew and engineers, by necessity, need to be educated and intelligent people whilst the prime qualifications for aircrew (apart from lightning reflexes and a good memory) are the ability to talk self-opinionated, noisy bolleaux while nursing a half pint of very weak lager at the mess bar.
Fair's fair though. If you're going to pay a guy to drive a machine with more brake horsepower than a 100 Ferraris and the destructive capabilities of an armoured battalion while looking down the gun-sight at a Mounted Camel Squadron of the Taliban's finest you don't really need a vegetarian Buddhist who'll immediately carry out a risk assessment survey, probe his conscience and do a cost/benefit analysis.

Military Plane Shot down over Libya - looks like Gaddafi has every intention of defying the No fly zone...

so that was a quick cease fire my opinion is send in some cruise missiles and all attack planes after those missiles have taken out some sam sites to have a blast on the tanks. Also what shot that mig down earlier today
---------- Post added at 09:22 ---------- Previous post was at 09:07 ----------

Hah! I'm surprised anyone was convinced by that lying murderous, terrorist supporting/loving despot..He'll do anything to hang onto power even to announcing a ceasefire whilst continuing to fight.
He's an expert at muddying the waters.

He seems to be using the same tactics as the iraqi information minister
