Re: PC keeps restarting
No luck with the system restore. This morning I started the machine before I went to work and it asked me to activate my Windows as it thought it was not legit (OEM purchased when I built the machine) anyway it was happy once I activated it and within 5 mins restarted itself. So I rebooted in Safe mode and ask my wife to keep an eye on it to see if it reboots. If it doesn't then I think I may try a live CD and see if it reboots. I'm also going to give the machine a quick clean tonight as there is a little but of dust but I can also try reseat the cards etc and see if that helps.

This is probably the first thing he should have tried.

Re: PC keeps restarting
I had a faulty power swtch give similar symptoms once upon a time.
Mind you by the time I found the fault it had worsened to randomly starting up the affected PC as well as shutting it down.

Re: PC keeps restarting
Does it matter what version of memtest I use ? I found v1.70 on my ubuntu live cd
---------- Post added at 18:09 ---------- Previous post was at 18:05 ----------
I think my motherboard has some memory test as well, I got a ASUS P7P55D-E LX
---------- Post added at 19:47 ---------- Previous post was at 18:09 ----------
How do I install memtest to usb
---------- Post added at 21:44 ---------- Previous post was at 19:47 ----------
Memtest 1.7 has been running now for 3 hours 40 mins passed 7 errors 0. Its still running should I leave it running overnight? The machine has not rebooted today while it was in safe mode and while running memtest.

I'd do a complete fresh install... If it's not too much trouble.

Re: PC keeps restarting
The thing is its going to be a real pain. I was hoping it was a hardware issue. How could it be a software issue if it suddenly started restarting itself. I could understand if I installed something recently and it start resetting.

Re: PC keeps restarting
it just keeps going until you stop it, so that means it has done a complete set of tests 27 times.
I think as suggested earlier try using a live CD OS for a while and see what happens

Most reboots are software related as other hardware faults often result in freezes. Overheating issues to the point of shut off would turn the system off but it would crawl first and the multi and voltages would drop as long as this was not turned off in bios
Gut instinct says a reinstall will fix it but it could be more serious ie failing PSU. You could rule out software with a live linux install see if it has problems if it does its not windows

im sticking with what I said here until tested I personally can offer no more advice

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...untu4_i386.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.46 80]
The card I'm using is http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190138

Re: PC keeps restarting
I think I may have found the cause. When I startup in safe mode I looked under the unistall programs and I see skype 5.1 was installed on 16/02/2011 and I started to have problems on the morning of 17/02 which is when I had shut my machine down overnight. I see others have also experienced problems. How do I uninstall it in Safe mode? When I try to I get an error saying "The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."
