As a point of fact, it wasn't a ruling, it was an opinion offered to the judges by a senior lawyer. The judges do often accept these opinions and rule the same way, but it's not over yet.

That aside, you should pay close attention to the progress of the court case Johnnymeg has linked to. It doesn't matter how you steal your cable services, all the boxes are as illegal as each other and when they catch you, you will wind up in front of the beak facing a large fine or up to 5 years in jail.

I am sure we all want that senior lawyers opinion addopted by the judges in 3 or so months time..more competition prices drop dont we??

as for those guys behind the starview franchise they are big boys and justice will ofcourse take its course no doubt, although for anyone stealing cable or satellite by purchasing one of those boxes will hardly get nearly 5 years in jail infact show me a case were anyone individualy stealing cable or satellite has got time??infact show me a case were anyone has got done for having chipped boxes in their homes!!infact this link posted by Ben http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/loc..._25m_1_2391258

It's not over until the fat lady sings:

Yes, I think most people would. I'd be happy to see Sky's institutionalized monopoly broken up. I'm simply pointing out the difference between legal advice and a court judgement. Here's hoping the judges in this case take that advice.

You know what - I can't point to a case involving an individual with a single box. Doesn't mean to say it doesn't happen though. Actually I think it's unlikely that an individual brought to court would go to jail unless they were a repeat offender. More likely they would get a fine. But they would still have a criminal record for fraud, which is unlikely to be helpful for any future job they might apply for.

The police and VM are always more likely to go after the big boys. As with drugs busts, if you take out the dealers you take out more of the problem in one go than you would by taking out the individual junkies on the street corners. But the individuals on the street corners are still law-breaking junkies. And junkies do still get done for possession when the boys in blue find them.

well the boys in blue never arrested 1 single person for having a chipped box in their house(never seen 1 link over the years)...and even if you were to show me a link or 2 i would imagine the customers of virgin media that got done was miniscule..but enough about all that its in the past..as i said i only posted on this thread because someone else bumped it and i was reading back about the Karen Murphy case and a few senior members were acting flippantly and basically calling karen and people like Karen the devil incarnate.

You would just be blacklisted from getting services from any ISP.
