Re: [Update] ALL 20>30Mb upgrade discussion

Well phoned retentions today as my contract was up, got the superhub for free, never got a router with my 20meg service, and moving to the 30meg. Bill is also reduced. No £30 charge.

Bravo virgin.

Here it also states it's free

http://shop.virginmedia.com/broadban...s-routers.html

New and existing customers:
Free when you add or upgrade to 30Mb broadband,
50Mb broadband or 100Mb broadband
£75 when taken with 10Mb broadband

happy days , still tried to charge me the £30 initially , speaking to offshore and he was really not interested and just wanted me off the phone but said he had sorted the upgrade , rang back and got an english call centre to find out what the other guy had done (as at first he said my superhub would arrive on monday even though i had told him i didnt need one) the english call centre was adamant that the £30 still had to be paid , whilst talking to him my hub reset and it was sorted , got him to check my account to make sure nothing had been ordered or charge made and he confirmed it was free , have sent him the url to the virgin media forum as he still didn't have a clue what was going on....

Re: [Update] ALL 20>30Mb upgrade discussion

darkm, can I ask what package you're on and what you're currently paying? Retentions have said the exact opposite to me than what you was told. Thanks.

Re: [Update] ALL 20>30Mb upgrade discussion

Good result there Bulky! I'm thinking something similar will occur when I ring up.

Can I just ask... did you notice the revision of the Super Hub change after the upgrade? Here's the specs of mine, pre-30Mbps change, as a reference.

Standard Spec EU DOCSIS 3.0
Hardware Version 2.00
Software Version V5.5.2R20
MAC Address a0:21:b7:01:xx:xx
Serial Number 2HA20BUU0xxxx
CM Certificate Installed

Re: [Update] ALL 20>30Mb upgrade discussion

I'm on XL bb & no other package, so that's around 36£ a month. Phoned up to get the 30mb upgrade and he tells me I'm now getting a £8.50 reduction on top of that. No idea why, he mentioned people usually get £1.50 off (which I saw in this thread) but I get more.
Can't complain!

So far, an ambit 256 modem, my own wireless router and Virgin's 20mb connection has been stable and reliable, so I don't know if I should consider taking a leap of faith now for the extra 10MB speed increase or just wait 6 months or so for the firmware bugs to be worked out with the superhub and then ask for the upgrade.
Generally for basic use it be fine.

Timeouts I dont experience on outbound connections, eg. I can hold ssh connections fine to servers I manage. So I think thats only an issue on inbound connections.

The ping problem is a non issue if you dont need to ping yourself eg. dont use line quality graphs.

The missing features will depend if you need them or not.

For all but the timeout problems so far that I know off the DMZ workaround will resolve, however some things cannot be fixed with double NAT like voip functions on routers. As far as I know the WOL issue has no fix yet either.

VM let me keep my dir615 router which I expect will be the case with every self install, so DMZ will be an option to you with that.

Re: [Update] ALL 20>30Mb upgrade discussion

ok - update here - got the activation fee waived on my retention bundle, but still need to pay £5 per month extra. I will keep phoning over the next few weeks as its hardly a "special" deal and only a few quid cheaper than the standard price I'm paying.

Now on 30mb and very nice it is too.

To my way of thinking if they want to take my retentions deal away to upgrade, then that is not what i was offered in the first place.
Same thing happened to me back in October. I was persuaded not to cancel on the basis that my 20Mb would be updated to 30Mb around January. When I spoke to somebody in retentions last week, he as good as accused me of lying.

Up to that point I just wanted to get what had been agreed with me. After that, I signed up with BT Infinity within 15 minutes of putting the phone down.

Thanks for checking.

Perhaps someone more knowledgable on the subject could tell us all exactly what gets changed by technician which requires the Super Hub reboot?

Re: [Update] ALL 20>30Mb upgrade discussion

sending a new config to any cable modem requires it to reboot to apply the changes. since the superhub is all in one device I guess that means rebooting the entire router.

I really wish this could be gotten as a download from VM site and applied yourself, rather than having to mess about on the phone to get it done that way. Obviously with some kind of "advanced users only, you can break your internet connection if you don't do it right!" warning.
