Re: Green box doors left open
both of the ones near me have mains supply as a billow of smoke came out of one once and took down everything when there was a power surge.

Re: Green box doors left open
Tried to get through to Virginmedia to help them out and report an open box and they didnt understand so can someone please chase this up for me.
There is a fully open green box on Tennis Court Drive, Leicester near the junction with Greenland Drive.
I noticed it whilst passing this morning.
Thanks.

Good luck with that!
I reported one at the end of my road twice in Sept 09, the put plastic sheeting over it several times, it took over a year to be properly sorted!

Re: Green box doors left open
Sorry if this seems very very stupid but is there no way virgin could put the cabinets under ground? obv not without access but just so they are not easily access-able to any one? may seem stupid but only asking.

Re: Green box doors left open
I reported one on my friends road, he has been having trouble with internet for so long, this could possibly be the reason, people fiddling with them. hopefully they do something about it.

A lot of cabinets in ex-Telewest areas are underground already and they are now being moved above ground. Having kit underground has its problems with water ingress and damage so now everything is above ground.
The problem isn't having kit in cabinets, its the maintenance and quality of the cabinet shells. Remember a lot of these cabinets will now be 15-20 years old in some areas, no wonder they are looking a bit neglected!

Heavy duty cabinets have their inherent problems as well. Thicker metal cabinets results in poorer heat dissipation in hot weather, also much greater costs to install.
I understand there is a project to modernise new cabinets and tidy up the ones that in greatest need of a bit of TLC but I dont know any more than that.

Re: Green box doors left open
Hmmm... BT have installed a VERY "Heavy Duty" phone cabinet
in Whalebone Lane North, (Dagenham area), just recently ... (One MASSIVE Lock),
with ventilation slots all round the bottom ... so it CAN (presumably) be done,
and far more "vandal proof" than the TWO "comparitively-flimsy" Virgin
cabinets I've seen "vandalised open" recently ... all within a five mile
walk Dagenham-Chadwell Heath area

What your referring to is a BT Infinity cabinet. This is a Fibre Node cabinet and not a smaller DP cabinet like the ones NTL and Telewest deployed for local access. The smaller VM cabinets are still quite basic with a single locking point whereas new Nodal cabinets are certainly much better than they used to be (VM cabinets made by same people that make BT cabinets).
Its much harder to upgrade an existing cabinet than it is to build a brand new one, I would expect any future change to existing street furniture to be for superior build types than are currently deployed.
