Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.

Just called VM told them my router is faulty which it is.

The guy said they are despatching a new router I asked what make and was told Netgear

He then said when it arrived I would need to call about activating my wireless services??
I asked what he meant and he said its an advanced router I asked if it is the hib and he said he didnt know ( great lot of good that) I assume by the fact I need to make a call to activate something that I will be sent one of these hub jobbies which with the lack of user setting in the router part I am a little disapointed.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.

I am sure they can only order the hub or superhub on the systems now.

If he has entered the correct code then you should receive a D Link router, he may have tried to order you a Netgear WGR614 though depending on your package.

I rather doubt he has sent you a hub as that would be chargeable as we do not have the function to send out free hubs as yet so you should get like for li8ke when we send replacements.

if its just a router why would I need to call? if he has sent the Netgear out then thats the one for 20 meg and down isnt it? I am on 50 meg so the netgear would be useless or does it support 50 meg?

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.

I got a D-Link DIR-615 today, one of the D2 units. Took DD-WRT straight off. Now running a very recent December build.

It's not quite set up properly yet but it's usable. Wireless N only gives me 130Mbps although DD-WRT reports it is 300Mbps. But as potential further proof that the Super Hub I was sent is completely worthless, performance is exactly the same if not better for LAN, WAN or both simultaneously. And will no doubt improve when things are set correctly, but even if not at least the dropouts will be gone for good.

To make good on my promise - thanks! Although I'd rather have gotten one free from VM I'm really tired of wrangling with them so it really was worth a tenner.

Right! I have some network pruning to do. There are currently five routers on my LAN and I'm hoping to dump two of them. Without the Super Hub I have no gigabit switches, but since the three remaining ones will all be DD-WRT boxes I can live with that just to get the POS off. And presumably back to VM at some point.

Well he should have sent you a D Link then as that is the standalone router for that package, I will be interested to find out if he sent you a Superhub as it should not be possible as yet.

As I'm in a nitpicking mood...

There's an F1, F2 and G1 revision now too, all of which are unsupported by dd-wrt.

So, supported:
C, D, E (most).
Unsupported:
A, B, E2, F, G.

Would you like to look at your majority again?

"It's a feature, not a bug".

Overzealous interference avoidance algorithm (40Mhz switches itself off if it detects any other beacons on either channel), introduced with the new driver since build 15xxx and onwards. If you want 300mbps mode to come on and stay on, you'll need to use build 14929 or older.

A good link at 144mbps on the DIR-615 will give about 90mbps of wireless throughput, 300mbps will only really up this to ~95mbps due to the 100mbps port limitation. But you may see some improvements at longer ranges.

Teehee, welcome

I think I must have got my connection in the last month during which VM were still handing out free DIR-615's. I've since bought another dozen off eBay mind you.

Yeah, hands up, didn't really do much research on that one. Probably more accurate to say about half do, half don't. As the most commonly available one seems to be the D2 loaded with 1.00VG firmware, not quite as big an issue as it could be.

I read the whole thread over on the DD-WRT forum and tried r14929. Helped a bit, but I still couldn't hit the ~12.5MB/s speeds when doing N to ethernet transfers. When I reverted to the stock firmware this was fixed immediatly.

The main reason I was using DD-WRT on the DIR-615 was to have the WAN port become another switch as DHCP and main cable modem connection is being handled by my WRT54GS v2.1. As the stock firmware supports this feature it's not a problem.

To be fair I'd like to try going from one wireless N device to another using the same router, see if there are any speed improvements on LAN file transfers even allowing for the throughput drop.

I must admit I'm tempted to stockpile them as well, make my whole network backbone out of them. Small, efficient and easy to see LEDs. Most of the devices on my network don't do/need Gigabit speeds so as long as wireless N achieves 100Mbps to keep up with the "Fast" ethernet ports there's no real problem; being able to handle 50Mbps cable is going to be the thing. That Ralink SoC should be up to the task... still need a seperate 50Mbps capable modem though.

---

And to put the boot in a little more with the Super Hub... I had two PCs connected at Gigabit speeds, with one streaming 1080p HD content to the other, outputting through HDMI with hardware decoding done on the graphics card.

I was getting some lag on the video playback and assumed I'd bought the non-"High Speed" HDMI cable. Actually no - dropping in the DIR-615 solved this problem, too.

In my experience the Super Hub fails at every single thing, ethernet or wireless. I've used dozens of different types of router and it is by far the worst. Why VM are "upgrading" customers to this turkey is completely beyond me.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.

Hmmmm. Just to throw in another opinion, I copied some files over from my NAS (about 2.5GB) and experienced the same network performance I did with my old DG854. The wireless side has been an improvement as well with less dropouts and quicker reconnection.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.

I've had the superhub for months now and its been great. I've had no issues at all with my connection wired or wireless. I think its great.

Agree, works great once firewall is switched off. Looks nice too.

Yeah, dd-wrt is a bit flaky still with Ralink SoC's (well nowhere near as flaky as openwrt, but it's still a relatively new platform support wise). It's not the fastest thing in the world, though my one-dimensional tests did see it hit pretty decent speeds but only with a lot of tweaking.

In my limited testing I've hit line speed (95mbps) routing performance with dd-wrt with all additional features off, but once QoS is turned on it'll drop to about ~45mbps and hit 100% CPU. Openwrt tends to do a lot better in routing performance (and overall CPU performance) and has better QoS anyway so once the wireless on it gets stable, that might be the better way to go.

To be fair, you do seem to have had a pretty bad experience with the Superhub but it seems to be unusually bad rather than the norm. I've not had one myself, nor do I intend to get one for my cable service, so I don't really have an opinion either way. Just to be sure, have you turned off all the security features (firewall, flood detection, etc.)? These helped a lot with other people but not sure if it'll be of use to you.

zekeisaszekedoes I tried telling them the same on the dd-wrt forums, I told them 300mbit is fine on stock firmware and the wireless issue is a dd-wrt one, got shot down tho.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.

Just got mine in the post (only took 4 weeks) and I will be having a play with it tonight.

I was surprised to see it came with a raft of stuff I don't need but at least I have some spare cables and a new splitter .

Fingers crossed it will perform ok and I will reserve judgement on its ability until I've witnessed it for myself.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.

All set up and working a treat now, I will be doing a little gaming shortly to see how it fairs, so far I've only turned off the IP Flood Detection.

I will see how the upnp copes with my xbox and ps3 instead of setting up port forwarding or using the DMZ

fingers crossed
