Channel 5 HD -4.3 Format?
I have a problem with Channel 5 HD for some reason this channel seem to be transmitting in only a 4.3 format. I have been through all of the tv settings and also the vm box settings all with no joy. The standard Channel 5 channel is fine and so are all of the other channels.
Please could someone confirm if Channel 5 HD is transmitting on a different format?

It was probably a 4:3 broadcast, and you've got your box setup to stretch the SD channels. On the HD channels the black sidebars are part of the broadcast so prevent you from stretching the picture.

It's just the programme you was watching at the time was filmed/broadcast in 4:3, as said above, unlike the SD channels which you may have set to force to 16:9, it will show in its true format.
I don't really known if Five have that much actual HD content yet... or how much of it is just upscaled :/

I'd imagine only the US series like CSI are actually proper HD.

I understand what you are saying about the program may have been filmed in 4.3. However the normal Channel 5 (SD) broadcasts with a full screen i.e 16.9

HD channels that broadcast programmes filmed in 4:3 will do so by putting the black bars down the side, as for SD you probably have either the V+ set to 720 wide or 1080 wide which will stretch your SD picture.

HD channels transmitting an older show shot in 4:3 will broadcast in 4:3, keeping its original ratio. Where as SD channel broadcasts are stretched to 16:9 if your box is set to 720/1080 Wide.

The new CSI series are still upscaled as they haven't paid for the HD rights
