Desktop Icon question

Can anyone tell me how to stop the boxes under the desktop icons from being highlighted/being in a darker colour? O/S XP, many thanks.

ok first try right clicking desktop arrange by and make sure lock web items to desktop is not ticked

I don't have single icon on my desktop.... can't stand the clutter.

While I agree that not having a cluttered desktop is a good idea, you do know that is what the desktop is for don't you? Seems a bit daft to have none there.
