Re: Traffic Management Policy

Virgin Marketing : to get people to sign up :

"Up to 20Mb speed
Download a music track in less that 2 seconds5, or a 1.6GB film in under 12 minutes."

Since their latest throttle is designed to protect real-time streaming (so they say), I wonder which websites or resources they have in mind that offer these 1.6GB movies that can be downloaded in 12 minutes?

Re: Traffic Management Policy

This is even better :

"Up to 50Mb speed
Download a music track in 1 second5, and a 15GB HD movie in less than an hour."

How many non-filesharing websites/resources are offering full-speed 15G HD Movie downloads. Answers on a postcard...

This is how Virgin are enticing people to sign up. So clearly users should have an expectation to be able to do this (and not in the small hours of the morning)

Re: Traffic Management Policy

so this new traffic shaping only for 50mb customers?

if i downgrade to 20mb package, i'll get faster speed (3.5GB cap in the evening) than 50mb package?

No, traffic shaping is on all tiers and will be on the 100Mb tier when it comes out.

Makes you wonder who will upgrade to 100Mb?

Chrysalis, isn't that the speed you should be getting (approximately) on a 20Mb/s connection?

20Mb/s = 2.5MB/s, 2.5MB/s * 60 = 150MB per minute, times 12 minutes = 1.8Gigabytes - doesn't seem so far off.

Or to put it another way, 1.6GB / (12*60) = 1,600MB / 720 = 2.22MB/s, which is 17.77Mb/s.

It really stupid to wait until midnight. All isp's traffic management is far better than virgin media.

If u downloading STM limit say 6000mb and you done 6001mb just before 21:00, say 20:59 and it will stay for 5 hours until 01:59 and after midnight it won't let you return to normal speed until 01:59 target.

Virgin media should scrap that silly 5 hours limit around nearer 9pm.

50Mb does have STM !!! but never say on traffic management sites but I getting 6mb for few hours with 7gb then it throttling down to slow 800kbps for bloody all day until midnight.

What going on virgin media ??? the STM doesn't be on our premium 50Mb. I will have to tell virgin media to forget 100Meg as I will not going to sign up if it still STM applied on both 50Mb and 100Mb and what the point ?

Re: Traffic Management Policy

It's becoming a bit of a pain in the behind. I've got 50mb broadband. A 350mb sized video file used to take me no longer than 2 mins to download. Now it's taking me 35 mins.

I don't download to excess, just the odd TV show here and there. I'm getting the same speeds Telewest was giving me 5 years ago. 50mb is all smoke and mirrors now. Not worth the money, 100mb broadband? Good luck selling that. Pity I'm stuck in contract for another 9 months

You are allow to request to downgrade to large size 10Mb with the remaining 9 months on your contract left. Give a virgin media a call, they will downgrade you back down to 10Meg for lower price.

I will do the same too. As 50Mb is pointless now and VM is BLOODY LIED to us all, time to complaint to OFCOM.

Re: Traffic Management Policy

It sounds like VM are having a disaster. Hopefully they are planning to finesse the policy and the protocols/filters etc. Although if that is there plan, the project management has been horrendous thus far.

I cant comment on my VM speeds currently as I'm at my uni house, where we have Sky Broadband.

The Sky connects at 10MB (albeit advertised as up to 20MB) but no traffic shaping at all and I CAN consistently max out the 10MB connection downloading from Powerusenet - I don't by the way!

If VM is as bad as this thread suggests then it would appear I am getting a far better deal with Sky now than I do with VMs 20MB package.

Re: Traffic Management Policy

I have given up trying to play Call of Duty Blacks Ops tonight due to the packet loss and ping spikes. Good advert for VM when they bugger up the release day of what could be the biggest game this year.

Re: Traffic Management Policy

i was speaking to a vm bb tech today asking him about the 100mb, he asked me what i was on and i told hiim, he said he's quite shocked at what vm are doing and the punters wont be too happy when their next plan hits, i asked him what he meant about that and he replied, a couple of us yesterday were having a chat outside the depot and one of them said did you hear vm's next plan, apparently vm are going to stm all internet activity.

meaning traffic shaping on p2p and usenet and surfing

if tht's the case i wont be with vm for much longer
