Or we could further tax the nasty crap that passes as 'food' that helped get them that way.

Sugar - The Bitter Truth is essential viewing. Common sugar that people put in their tea, have in sweets, etc, is 50% poison and should be treated as such. Ethanol is taxed to control its' consumption, the health impact of fructose over the long term is quite similar.
