Re: Windows Defender

Just restart when you need to, it just won`t run again. You may find things a bit snappier also as when you install most AV`s they disable defender real time scanning. You possibly had both scanning stuff in real-time.

p.s. I agree with Ben B, if you have a decent Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware then imo windows defender just takes resources and should be disabled.

If you are happy that your current security software will do the job to disable windows defender got to Start->Type in services->click the entry services with the 2 cogs next to it->a new window like the picture will appear, scroll down to "Windows Defender" and double click it->In the new window select "Disabled" from the drop-down->Click Apply then Stop.
Windows Defender will now not start on next re-boot.

It's worth remembering, however, that Windows Defender can sometimes pick up things that Virus checkers miss.

At work, a few years ago, Windows defender (running on my machine) picked up attempts to infect my machine from several other machines on our network (all of which had apparently up to date virus checkers).

Re: Windows Defender

I realise defirish's problem is probably sorted but having only just had a chance to play catch-up on the forum I have to say I had the same problem and it was very irritating. It even blocked me coming on here at one point.

Thinking that there was a problem of some kind between my AV and the Defender I changed AV to MSE and disabled Windows Defender as a result of reading about the need to do so on one of the Microsoft forums and haven't had a problem since.

@ v0id. I didn't realise MSE already had it built in so I am now wondering why the stand alone version and the one built into MSE should work differently?

I now have it deleted but would there have been a way of keeping it and have just got it to stop blocking me from sites. I didn't even know I had it till today when I turned on my laptop and then it wouldn't let me on some sites that I had no problem going on before

Re: Windows Defender

Another vote for Windows Defender is rubbish. Unsinstall and install MSE for free!

Windows Defender is actually removed by McAee VirusScan Enterprise - which we use at work...that must say something for the "product".
