I have since plugged the cable direct into the modem and once again it is running flawlessly. Old Sky HD box now reinstalled so we can watch TV

He has basically as you say installed the 3 way splitter to feed three devices and hasn't taken into account the decrease in signal this will produce.
Poor installation by people who do not really care, install and go.
You need to get onto VM as soon as possible and get them out to rectify the problem.
