Solar Flare - effect due Tuesday?
There has apparently been a significant solar storm which could potentially have some effect here as early as Tuesday.

I missed the last time a similar event caused displays of the 'aurora borealis' in more southern latitudes than usual - might be worth a look on Tuesday night??

Nasa recently warned that Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation “space storm”.

I'll be having a lookout. I flew to bloody Iceland over Christmas/New Year and stood on the roadside in the middle of nowhere at -20C for a couple of hours hoping to see the Northern lights. All I saw was some snow covered fields, and I got extremely cold boots...
It would be good to just brush the curtains aside and go: oh look, Aurora Borealis, that's nice...

I don't understand all information in the following link but it was updated to-day and thought it may be of interest.

Re: Solar Flare - effect due Tuesday?
Top link, Jo. I think the important bit from that page is this:
Quote:
Geophysical Activity Forecast: Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on day 1 (03 August) due to the arrival of the first of two CMEs observed on 01 August (this CME was associated with the long-duration C3/Sf flare at 01/0826Z). Activity is expected to be at active to minor storm levels with a slight chance for major storm on days 2 - 3 (04 - 05 August) due to the arrival of the second slower CME observed on 01 August (associated with a large filament disappearance).

... which essentially says that due to a Coronal Mass Ejection (i.e. the sun throwing bits of itself off into space) which is heading in our direction, there's a reasonably good chance of seeing some aurora tonight and a better chance of seeing some aurora tomorrow night.
I'm in a good spot here in the highlands ... if we get a break in the clouds I'll keep an eye out and get pictures if possible.
