Re: stop ip appearing in IRC channels
If the server/channel isn;t set to MODE +X then the only way is via something like a proxy..

Re: stop ip appearing in IRC channels
Nickserv might have a cloaking facility, depends on which package they run..
Best to use a full client rather than a webclient that way you can run commands automatically on startup like nickserv login and cloaking if available

Just been on there, their Nickserv doesn;t have a hide facility

You might find as well as they have an open policy that they also don;t allow open proxies.. Such is the way of IRC

Re: stop ip appearing in IRC channels
Yeah Nickserv might mask your IP if they use it or something similar, try typing
/msg nickserv register
and see what it comes back with if anything, otherwise you can rent a bouncer (BNC) which is like a proxy for connecting to IRC

Re: stop ip appearing in IRC channels
Just try the command or
Code:
/mode <nickname> +x
The actual format of the commands differ from server software to server software, the affect however is the same (as that usually sets cloaking on with most IRC Server software unless it's been disabled on purpose by the server admins).
That however only works on that one instance of the connection, so everytime you connect you would have to do it.

Re: stop ip appearing in IRC channels
I thought that mode +X is only settable via a sysop?

Re: stop ip appearing in IRC channels
Not on most ircds it isn't. Users can set/unset it usually unless its a sysop only setting (which I think, IIRC it is on ConferenceRoom IRCd).
Its been a fair while since ive SysAdmin'd on any IRC Servers though. Things can change (and I guess they would with rules regarding logging all data etc)

Re: stop ip appearing in IRC channels
Sorted it out I spoke to freenode support and it come to the conclusion that I needed another client to cloak my ip. As i use firefox I went with chatzilla. Quiet impressed by it so far. Thats for your help guys..

I don't think it did get thought of, as irc servers were mainly open source (with the exception of a few) so people just added bits as and when they thought it was necessary.
IRC was designed for simple text based communication, but then things like DCC file transfers got added and then people started using it for illegal file downloads etc, and then the hostmask mode (+x) got added to protect people from hacks etc.
