Re: The iPhone thread

I don't think the legality of it was ever an issue for the devs, good to see that smug git Jobs getting a kick up the hole though.

Re: The iPhone thread

I didn't think the legality of it was in question.

The developers of the hacks never (as far as I could tell) pushed them for installing pirate software. While it may (and probably does) void the warranty, I don't see that it's any more illegal than installing a non-ford approved fanbelt in a Focus..

Re: The iPhone thread

The DevTeam has always been very anti-warez AFAIK.

The legality was in question before, though. Never totally 100% THIS IS CLEARLY ILLEGAL, but certainly a grey area, at best.

There were previously "issues" over the status of Jailbreaking, because it involved circumventing the "technological copyright protection measures" (or whatever they call it)... something the DMCA prohibits.

The new DMCA exemption granted by the Copyright Office specifically allows it though:

Quote:
Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.
There's also the use of Apple's copyrighted code, from changing the firmware. That's now allowed too though, as it's a tiny amount of code that's changed, & it's solely for this newly decreed fair use.

This is a good article on it:

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/n...e-fair-use.ars

Console modchips are a similar issue. You own the console, it's yours to do with as you wish. But... a modchip violates the DMCA, due to it being a "circumvention measure" (it bypasses the protection & allows the use of copied games), and due to it tinkering with the copyrighted software of the console manufacturer (well, Xbox1 modchips did anyway). Not sure what the current standing is with them though...

Re: The iPhone thread

there is no need to install modchips in anything anymore all done in software( unless you count the r4 and their ilk as modchips)

Re: The iPhone thread

Apple never actually took any legal action over the jailbreaks, the theory is that they didn't really mind but also didn't want to be seen to condone it. Especially as it voids your warranty.

As far as I know this doesn't stop them disabling it in software or voiding your warranty for doing so.

Re: The iPhone thread

my 3GS did a weird thing today after I put the 4OS on it. used the ipod for the first time and it played one track from an album then select the same track from the greatest hits. Then it played a song by the Who from Tommy then played the same track from Live at Leeds. Then it did the same with a Rolling Stones track. very strange

Not sure if this is just my fault for listening to the oldies

Very nice. Adds more bulk compared to using a Bumper, but it's worth it for me for the added protection.

Re: The iPhone thread

Have iPhone - Get tracked.

Seems like Apple are after your realtime geo location so they can track and target you with ads (and more) and if you opt out you will not have access to new apps from their store.
