Can any please xpalin why they fell that the current range of STB's by virgin (mainly Samsung V+) won't support TIVO?

I can't see why It can't. Its works with NET players such as ITV and BBCi, its has a direct connection to the network adminin itself an IP address for the box. Its meaty hardware as it runs the awful VM block EPG and I doubt it has a 333mhz processor :P.

It basically does more or less certain elements and princpiles of what TIVO does this now.

Sky's EPG is a pile of crap. It's only now on the HD boxes got things that the VM EPG had 10 years ago (such as the preview picture on the tv guide).

To hold up the fact that Sky's EPG can run on all their boxes is frankly irrelevant when it's an EPG from the stoneages.

If you want VM to be an innovative leader in TV you HAVE to accept that there will be points where they have to sit there and go "ok, we can no longer support giving these boxes the latest and greatest" and cut off support for them. It's simple common sense.

Either you remain tied to outdated hardware that's insufficient to move forward, or you innovate and bring in new features and new user experiences that are only available on modern hardware.

It has no support for flashlite which is an instrumental part of Tivo's latest generation EPG.

Very well put TheDon what im saying is what happens say Virgin change to Tivo and someone with a V+ box has a fault and needs a box swap ?

Fair enough. So really software related why it cannot run the EPG interface of new TIVO epg.

However, I am sticking with my guns on -

It does really what a PVR with a cable modem bulit in does (ie.. current/old gen TIVO does this point) i.e. it can connect to internet streams for media, save media, play media and works on linux opensource and if ever opened
up to the VM community (ofcourse it will never) but could be cable of running custom plugin's.

That's easy to answer. They will get another V+.

I would suggest that any new TIVO-type box would be a different STB, say, called V++.

No, it's hardware related. Flashlite requires hardware support in the same way that MPEG4 does. If the instruction set is not supported in hardware it's a no go.

You can stick to your guns all you like, your guns are wrong. There are fundamental issues in hardware that prevent it running the new tivo EPG.

This is the key word here mate "new tivo EPG".

My point is whats the difference between the current TIVO and the capabilties of the the samsung STB running it.

I can't see any real difference on what TIVo typically does and the Samsung STb not being to perform those duties.

But that's ultimately irrelevant as they're not getting the old Tivo software, and if they were, the issue would still stand? Two different EPGs, one still vastly inferior. It'd also just further confuse matters as you'd have people wondering why their new Tivo software wasn't the all singing and dancing one they've seen advertised.

Very good point. This is why I think it seems strange for Virgin to not look at an upgrade for V+ users even if it was at a lower price.

How do you know they aren't. You (and I) don't - because Virgin haven't yet announced their plans!

The ONLY thing they have said is that there will a TiVo box launched before the end of the year. That's it.
