If the VOD version was always available AND the quality was not reduced in anyway, either video or audio, compared to the linear version then it would be acceptable - but from what I see and hear of VOD it is not the same quality as the linear feed.

Slightly off topic but does anyone know if there is a Disney HD channel in the pipeline ? Seems unlike Disney to miss the boat , I know they have cinemagic Hd but most Disney shows are in Hd , you only need to look on demand for proof of that.

VM have been waiting a very long time to get these HD channels and have sold their own channels to Sky to make it happen. They will not delay a day longer than they have to to launch. So get the HDMI cables ready!

Just wondering if there will be any additional charge to watch Sky Basic/Premium HD content on XL? I guess we'll know soon-ish.

Either way, you know that Sky will respond to whatever VM announce, probably on the same day. They did it to BT last week and when VM itself launched on V Day, Sky choose that same day to announce the launch of Picnic. Guess which event got more coverage in the press?

So, watch out everyone for Sky's counter-attack. In a sense its already begun, with Sky eager to remind everyone that to watch all 5 Sky Sports channels in HD, you need a satellite dish on the side of your house.

I have seen rumoured on the web that Sky Movies HD and Sky Sports HD will be free to viewers of Sky Sports or Sky Movies.

I have been told by an insider that the Sky Basic HD Channels may join the TV Size XL package.

I agree that SD quality is much poorer than linear channels although I find the HD streams are identical - although no DD 5.1 audio which sucks. So HD progs with excellent audio production (e.g. Doctor Who, True Blood, The Good Wife to name a few) must be recorded or watched live to be fully appreciated anyway.

Also, VoD access is far too hit and miss. Sometimes you get lucky and it'll work first time but, more often than not, you have to try several times before it actually works.

Que Sera, Sera whatever will be will be but we are going to be watching football and movies in HD.

Sorry about that but i thought that someone needed to inject a bit of fun in to this speculation? As Horizon said the Irish competition authority will complete the merger on Saturday, as it has been passed to the Minister who rules within 10 days if they need to have a consultation?

100% agree - my insider also confirmed.

For anyone who has XL TV will have all new HD channels at no extra cost (Excl sports and movies - you only need to subscribe to these channels to get SS HD and SM HD no matter what size TV package your on.)

Merger Review Process


The merger review process of the Competition Authority involves:

(i) a review period (Phase 1), following which a determination must be made either to clear the merger or to proceed to a full investigation as described below. The Competition Authority's deadline to make a Phase 1 determination is one month after the appropriate date (as defined in section 19(6) of the Competition Act, 2002) or 45 days if any of the undertakings which have made the notification submits proposals to the Competition Authority.

(ii) a full investigation (Phase 2) if, after the Phase 1 investigation, the Competition Authority is unable to conclude that the proposed transaction will not lead to a substantial lessening of competition in any market for goods or services in the State. The Competition Authority's deadline to make a Phase 2 determination is four months after the appropriate date. Within this deadline, the Competition Authority must determine whether to clear the merger (with or without conditions) or prohibit the merger.

The appropriate date from which the above deadlines are calculated is normally the date of notification. However, this changes to a later date if the Competition Authority issues within one month from the date of notification a formal requirement to the merging parties to provide further information.

These deadlines do not change even if the period incorporates or ends on public holidays, bank holidays or Sundays.
