How set Spam to be deleted immediately, like before?

I am all IMAP and have my settings such that all mail to ntlworld.com is forwarded to mac.com and deleted from ntlworld.

Everything is working more or less as it was pre change except that in my e mail clients (Apple Mail and Thunderbird) list of folders, the Gmail/Spam folder is receiving spam which is showing up as unread incoming email.

I can't see any setting like there used to be, to chose to have spam deleted straight away. The create new filter option says spam folder is not used in filter search.

Grateful for any help.

Will your the clients allow you to not have the folder visible (subscribed to) the way Outlook does?

If so, do that and leave the Spam to be deleted afer 30 days. Out of sight out of mind - unless the spam filter gets something wrong in which case you've got 30 days to find something before it's lost rather than it being deleted instantly as you're requesting.

Thanks, I tried that, setting filtered "is spam" to be deleted immediately, and the spam showed up as unread mail in Gmail/bin. But this may have been a one-off issue after the change, so I will watch this space.

I also thought I would try forwarding the spam to mac.com and letting it get dealt with alongside the mac.com spam, but it wouldn't let me saying I was already forwarding to mac.com????

Thanks for the help

Thanks. Good thoughts! I think Thunderbird will let me do that, but can't see how to do it in Apple Mail. Might have to go all Thunderbird (but wife prefers Apple Mail).

Whereas the NTL spam filtering pre change seemed to work for me (no false positives etc), I am now at the mercy Gmail spam so maybe I should be monitoring it for a while rather than deleting immediately.

Further testing shows that actually using the "is spam" filter to "not send to spam" seems to be the way, rather than "delete".

This way it does not get into Gmail/spam or Gmail/bin folders and doesn't get shown by the unread message alert. I guess the spam is being forwarded to mac.com along with everything else.

Hope this is the last update. The real solution is easier than I thought......Change the forwarding option to "forward to mac.com, and MARK VIRGIN MEDIA COPY AS READ". No filters required.

Now all the forwarded emails are still visible in the Gmail folder, but are read, so don't get flagged by Apple Mail or Thunderbird as unread messages.

Before the change, I had to set it delete the forwarded messages from ntlworld because of the 30Mb limit.

Looks like the filter (to not send anything to the spam folder) IS required after all. Without the filter, the spam goes to the Spam folder and shows up in Apple Mail and Thunderbird as unread mail in Gmail/Spam folder.

Re: How set Spam to be deleted immediately, like before?

I ended up with "Forward to mac.com and DELETE Virgin Media copy" and leaving the spam filter in place.

Anything other than "delete Virgin Media copy' results in two copies being visible in my mail clients (obvious with hindsight)

I can set my mail clients so that only unread items in the INBOX are shown in the dock, so that I can ignore the unread items appearing in my ntlworld/Gmail folders.

Overall the change is a backward step for me, but I can live with it.
