Does anyone know if native SMTP on port 25 without SSL / TLS / authentication etc will continue to be offered once the migration to Google mail is complete?

Whilst secure SMTP is fine from most email clients, I've got a few server applications (e.g. apache web server) that send emails, and as far as I know need a native SMTP server to relay off.

The Virginmedia mail servers will stop being used and you will be required to use the new Google platform settings.

In which case does anyone know of a solution for sending SMTP from a Virgin Media connection?

It's not really feasible to run your own SMTP server nowadays as too many recipients block SMTP from dynamic IP ranges.

I suspect this could be the change that means I actually have to leave VM, which is a shame because I'm otherwise happy with it. Does anyone know if the business service offers native SMTP?

You can try the business arm HERE

Or maybe http://www.gmx.com/ or you can go for your own domain which would probably be a fairly cheap option to use.

I've got many of my own domains - but I'm not sure of the relevance or how that helps here.

Many applications require a basic SMTP server to send messages through.
Historically these have always been an absolute basic service provided by ISPs for their customers - right back to the early 90s.

As to GMX, as far as I'm aware GMX is a webmail service, not an SMTP relay provider so not sure of the relevance to the problem faced. I'm not looking for a webmail client - I'm looking for a basic SMTP server.

Having a quick search around the web there does seem to be ways of getting apache to send through an SSL based server and there should be no reason why the other programs can't either

Authenticated and SSL SMTP is not new, and not all ISPs run their own outbound servers anyway

use something like google apps or live domains and have an email address on your own domain pull all your VM mail.
(I currently have live domains pullling mail from 3 of my blueyonder alaises to a single address on my domain)

apache techicanlly doesnt send it it the backend things it runs llike php etc that does but apache 2 does suport ssl smtp give me other server you have ill let oyu know if they support it and if not how to doa wokr around

indeed, no reason why any application couldn't use SSL SMTP, but if the developers of an application have chosen not to develop support for it .... then no amount of configuration will get there.

Although Apache (James) server supports receiving mail with TLS, it can't send mail with TLS or SSL. php doesn't support SSL SMTP - so that's two of the internet's most popular server software ranges that only work with basic SMTP

Anyway - sounds like the original question is tentatively answered, it seems like VM intend to remove support for basic SMTP, and so far although a few helpful pointers, they either misunderstand the issue, or don't quite fit the requirement.

yes nativvely doesnt support but that doesmt mean you cant doa workaround or php6 does support ssl smtp

Without getting a business account you'll probably find that the business smarthost will work anyway.. Just that it's not as if the business side is on it's own IP's/network
