That looks good, and should get me over 2 gig, plus some performance gain (hopefully).

System Restore and Shadow Copy are different things. You are very unlikely to need Shadow Copy on a laptop. On my new laptop it was using 18Gb of wasted space. From a cmd prompt, "vssadmin list shadowstorage" will show what is allocated.

It says currently allocated 5 Gig with a maximum of 9and a bit, which is 15% of the HD space. I'm pretty sure that what I read on shadowstorage suggested that reducing the allocated size will limit system restore points though?

Like here for example.

Edit: page file is now on D. 2.5 Gig gained on C

Re: Extending boot partition (Vista)

Yes, it shares the space now but you shouldn't need 9Gb. I've set mine down to 2Gb and with two restore points it's using 460Mb.

As for moving profiles - in most cases just moving the Documents, Music etc special folders should be sufficient, which is very easy (shown at top of your last link).

Ah. ok. I'll do that.

Presumably, I can simply move the desktop folder for the two accounts? Seeing that's where most of the data live/get saved, that would probably give me sufficient space and make sure that most future data makes it to the D drive.

I don't think junction points are an option

Thanks for trying. I think I've created sufficient space now. Last night I had 5 Gig left, which went up to about 18 after disk cleanup, deleting restore points etc. I have since:

- Moved the page file
- Reduced shadowstorage to 2GB.
- Moved my desktop folder to the D drive.
- Noticed that the Spotify storage directory on C takes up 1Gig, so moved that to D as well.

I currently have 28 Gig free and, with the changes I made, I think it'll take a while for that to be filled up. Thankfully, I was able to do this without touching any of the wife's folders/settings (she has about 5 Gig on C), so she can just carry on as she was rather than having to fit into my regime.

Thanks for all the help guys. It's much appreciated

Re: Extending boot partition (Vista)

Do you use the Hibernation feature on the laptop?

If not you can remove Hiberfile.sys by doing "powercfg.exe -h off" form an elevated Cmd prompt. Could save you up to 2 Gb
