Re: running in safe mode so much quicker
Im going to attack this when im off work tomorrow but for now, hijack this runs but wont save a log. It advises me to run as admin but theres no option for that when I right click. It did show loads of the things zing mentioned.
With nothing running theres 178 processes in task manager im guessing that isnt good. VMs thing said only problem was optimising bb speed so ive ran that. Thanks again

also check to make sure you are not running behind a proxy.
Most BHOs can just be disabled and you wont miss what they offered

Re: running in safe mode so much quicker
It might also be a good idea to run CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner (if you haven`t allready) and maybe also go to Tools->Start up and list what the entries or take a screenshot.
I`m sure you have stuff running that isn`t necessary, 178 processes

Re: running in safe mode so much quicker
Got my processes down to 130, attached a screenshot. I ran ccleaner a couple of weeks ago, I might have another crack at it because I was unsure what I was doing!

Re: running in safe mode so much quicker
Right Im even more keen to sort this now as up to now Ive been unable to stream iplayer in HD with it constantly stuttering but Ive found it works fine in safe mode. I had just put it down to a problem with my line but obviously its not that as safe mode is fine
I managed to get hijackthis to save a log and I pasted it like you said but Im confused with what to do next, I dont want to bugger things up. Ive attached the log split in to two parts.
Ive ran ccleaner and the cleaner part removed 610MB of "stuff". I then ran the registry checker part of it and that came up with loads of stuff, again Im unsure if I just tick "fix/remove all"? Ive attached 2 small samples of that result.
If anyone could give me any further advice that would be great
edit: oops Ive attached 2 of the same pics for ccleaner

Wish I could help Speedy but I,m afraid it means sweet FA to me, did you try running the vm tune up utility just out of interest.

yeah I did thanks mate, it came back as everything fine apart from something to do with optimizing the broadband performance, so I ran that and it doesnt report any problems now. I think it only cleraed some files and altered some number of htp connections or something, I dont know its all gibberish to me

Re: running in safe mode so much quicker
First thing I would say is DO NOT run a reg cleaner unless you understand exactly what you are doing. I do a fair amount of re-install work for people that have just ticked "do it all". IMHO the gains from registry cleaning are negligable in most cases.
I'm a bit concerned by that crawler toolbar. Those sort of BHO things are quite often badly coded and can cause problems. If it's not essential I'd suggest you uninstall it.
On further reading, you're LOADED with all sorts of toolbars. No wonder your browsing is limping along. Time for a major springclean I think.

Thanks, thats why I thought Id best check first. Ive already managed to bugger up my ethernet drivers so I can now only connect using wireless, tried for weeks uninstalling and reinstalling drivers but it wont have it
I'll go delete the crawler one for now then, no idea what to do about all the registry things though, theres pages of the stuff
Is a major spring clean a reinstall of windows? Already done it once or twice this year

Re: running in safe mode so much quicker
Full re-install? At this point I'd say keep that as Plan B.
I'd remove as much as possible from Internet Explorer, all those toolbars and unnecessary BHO add-ins.
Try deleting your network card from device manager. On restart it should be re-discovered and re-installed. If you get lucky it'll find the right drivers.

Thanks, Ive gotten rid of some of them and things are definitely better Am I best leaving the registry problems then?
Ive tried removing and reinstalling the network card but it still doesnt work, strange how it always has #2 after it though

Re: running in safe mode so much quicker
Honestly I wouldn't bother too much about the registry stuff. Most of that looks like things such as 'unused file extension' which really doesn't matter at all. I'd personally only use a reg. cleaner if you have a situation causing issues. For instance, some programs will not re-install correctly if they see old left-over registry entries. Other than that you'll likely do more harm than good.

Re: running in safe mode so much quicker
Iv`e just read about a similar problem to yours regarding the network card on another site, maybe give it a try.
First off uninstall your the card form device manager.
Now go to your drivers folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers and see if there is a nvefd.sys there.
If there is is Cut not copy the driver file to the desktop (or somewhere safe)
Now re-boot and the computer should hopefully pick up the network card and use the Microsoft driver.
Good Luck.
p.s. Also check if there is a C:\Nvidia folder still there after install. If there is you may need to move it as it could try picking up the driver from there.
