Red Button v Sky HD

Hi all, I just received email from this forum asking me to join from cablehell!! I have poor eyesight so HD is valuable to me for that reason; was with VM but switched to Sky last year because of the many extra HD channels, the red button is great too because I can choose what I want to watch. Spoke to a VM rep when I cancelled and he told me Sky would never let them have the facility. Apart from that they would find it hard to to implement it in the same manner..........Straight from the horses mouth!!

Doubt it somehow just how would a vm rep far removed from any negotiations vm might have visa vi the red button issue,have any idea weather vm might carry it or not in the end.

I would take whatever a rep might say with a huge pinch of salt as in reality they probably know no more then we do,unless he has a direct line to sky HQ.


Anyhow i ditched sky sports and will not take it again their loss.

Hi Richard, OK everyone to his own. However, I did forget to mention this guy was from technical services somwhere in Middlesboro and seemed to be knowing what he was talking about............Also why do you think he would say that if it was in his remit to try to keep customers? He is one of those who ring you back trying to get you to stay with VM, he did offer some good deals then told Sky and got an even better one!

It would be easy, create a channel called sky sports red button 1 etc and relay the red button picture on there

Speak for yourself dude it's pretty obvious to me when I'm watching SD and HD, even with upscaling.

What people may find important is a YMMV question, not really my place to tell someone else their opinion, that's the government's job

Yes I was really responding to the flow of the thread Ignition rather than just your post. I do get what you are saying about some people finding HD more important than others. To me content will always be more important.

Totally agree - PQ is nothing if the content of the uber-quality picture sucks!

Red button simple choice really. If you want to watch a HC rugby match you are stuck with what VM/Sky decide you watch.
Don't laugh but I'm an avid Ulster supporter who lives in Wales and I've been wanting to watch my beloved Ulster team and been subjected to an Ospreys or Cardiff Blues match.
While we're on the subject of Red Buttons can anyone explain why Virgin customers don't get the choice of English commentary via the Red Button for games shown on S4C?

Get a decent TV if you can't tell the difference. If you can watch a game of football/rugby/golf on HD and not notice any difference between it and SD, then I'm afraid you should go immediately to your local opticians.

I can tell the difference but it really isn't that important to me. A poor game of football doesn't improve in better definition. Similarly I forget if I'm watching in HD or SD if it's an exciting game.

I'm sure I'd feel different if I was watching on a 60 inch screen but on 32 inch it doesn't make enough of a difference for me.

I notice the difference more on some of the nature documentaries but again not enough difference that I'd consider paying extra for it.

I more meant a lot of people still have crt or a screen thats not big enough to really notice the difference.

For sure on lcd's sdtv looks far worse than it does on a crt, on a crt sdtv is smoothed out as the pixels are not sharp.

I can watch a game of football and see what is happening fine? so why do I need to waste money on a new tv and hdtv subscription?

You might think so, but I think the statement, 'slightly higher quality' is utterly ridiculous. The difference between HD and SD is huge. Try watching HD for a couple of weeks on a decent sized TV (Something over 36 inches) and then change back to SD, it's like going from colour to black and white, especially in sport (And nature) programmes, and it's Sky Sports that you're talking about in this thread.

well this is it.

1 - sdtv on a crt is way better than on a lcd, so the gap between sdtv on a lcd and hdtv may be large but the gap between sdtv on a crt and hdtv on a lcd isnt so large.
2 - also to me a 36" tv is massive I have no need for such a tv.

Quite correct, you'd be counting down the days for the service to actually appear on your screen after pressing the red button

Anyway IMHO as I don't have a HD TV at the mo I would much prefer the content over HD
