The latest met office report said the volcano is still erupting & possibly intensifying.

LOL @ Dan Snow and his Dunkirk style evacuation of Calais

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8627922.stm

Quote:
TV presenter Dan Snow has mounted an operation to help people who are stranded in France following flight cancellations to return to the UK.

He has secured five rigid inflatable boats, each of which can hold ten people, which are being used throughout Sunday after leaving Dover at 0900 BST.

The team will ask for donations from those using the boats, with profits going to the Help for Heroes charity.

Not sure if I would be that desperate, to cross one of the busiest shipping channels in world in an inflatable......

How about hiding in a lorry at the Channel Tunnel terminal?

My boss is due to fly to New York tomorrow (for work), and a colleague to Vietnam (holiday). Neither will be pleased to see me tomorrow.

Re: Airports closed as volcanic ash drifts toward UK

Not Good

Quote:
Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Sunday April 18, 1000
The volcanic ash cloud from Iceland is currently spread across the UK. Based on the latest information from the Met Office, NATS advises that the restrictions currently in place across UK controlled airspace will remain in place until at least 0100 (local time) tomorrow, Monday 19 April.

There may be limited opportunity in Orkney and Shetland from 1900 (local time) today for some flights to operate under individual coordination with ATC. However, it is most unlikely that many flights will operate today and anyone hoping to travel should contact their airline before travelling to the airport.

We will continue to monitor Met Office information and review our arrangements in line with that. We will advise further arrangements at approximately 1500 (local time), today.

Re: Airports closed as volcanic ash drifts toward UK

Watching this morning's news about one group of travellers who made it onto a cross channel ferry from Caen to Portsmouth arriving about 9pm last night.

There was nearly a riot when they discovered that they were required to queue up for passport control because they were all in danger of missing the last train/bus home.

In the end the police who had been called by the Ferryport immigration control decided that everyone holding up their passports in the air was sufficient for them to pass through.

They all missed their connections though..and then spent the night at the train stations and bus station.

Why am I not surprised that the rail and bus companies seemed to make no effort to hold one or two services over.Where has the entrepreneurial spirit of our various travel industries gone?Me if I was the boss of National Express I'd be rubbing my hands with glee and arranging extra buses for occasions like this.

Re: Airports closed as volcanic ash drifts toward UK

BA are doing some test flights between Heathrow & Cardiff tonight. KLM & other European carriers have already carried out some test filghts internally and all planes showed zero signs of damage\contamination or errors in the storunning of the engines.

Re: Airports closed as volcanic ash drifts toward UK

Can they guarantee that every single airway is clear and will stay clear?? The tests they've done is like saying that because the B113 is clear of ice in mid january then every road in the country is clear and will stay clear

Re: Airports closed as volcanic ash drifts toward UK

To me the tests are sham because they not FLYING the height the danger is.

PLANES cant fly lower too far as they use more FUEL and would possible they could run out before destination on transatlantic flights. They use the upper Air to conserve fuel its alright flying 2-9k from heathrow to bristol put it upto 28k right in the thick of it see what happens. They WONT because it would be dangerous.

Airlines are now trying to pressure to re-open to me there is self interest of them stopping losing money rather than SAFETY.

CLOSING AIRSPACE whether we/they like it or not is the safest thing to do. What happens if they cave in allow them to fly and there is BIG AIR disaster say an airplane hits a TOWN or CITY as it loses all engines. Who will be to blame.
