Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!

My email account seems to have been upgraded today, as I got a number of old sent messages sent to my inbox.

Refreshing my folder list showed the new folders. I'm surprised they call it googlemail though (unless that's not normally seen) as I imagine that has potential to confuse. Screenshot below.

Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!

Got the email about the upgrade, thought very little of it cos I don't use ISP mail (it makes changing ISP a pain).

However, I logged into the webmail, just to have a look and see how customised it was etc (its not really). In the footer, I noticed a "Last Account Activity:" statement, interestingly, it wasn't from MY ip address... or any that I do check from.

Last account activity: 3 minutes ago at IP 62.254.26.101

A quick check leads me to.... know-httpgateway-6.server.virginmedia.net

Looking at other (POP3) requests, i see other addresses similar know-mailgateway-2.server.virginmedia.net

I'm assuming this is part of the new mail forwarding setup, and the Gmail system can't handle it properly - so not reporting our actual addresses?

Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!

If I have 2 PC's checking all email accounts in OE. once I've downloaded the email on one, it's no longer able to download on the other PC.
It's acting like it's not keeping the downloaded email still on the server.

From what I've read Virgin are now preferring us to use Webmail instead of the common pop3/smtp. I don't want to use webmail.

Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!

Add 'recent:' to the pop (but not the SMTP) usernames in OE and make sure 'Leave messages on the server' is enabled

Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!

Alternatively create folders in Virgin Media/Googlemail and use IMAP which means all mails are viewable from all locations. (If that makes sense?)

And that shows that the new offering is much more secure than the previous system that Virgin were using. I'm looking forward to using this when ntlworld.com gets ported over.

I can finally use secure authentication on my mobile devices without the need to go through my mobile service providers mail system and the associated problems they have.

BTW, that page you linked is in this article on this forum.

I would imagine a lot of people don't like the Google mail platform, but Virgin have looked at the bigger picture here, and I believe the majority will benefit from the new features.

I don't think it's so much that people don't like the Gmail platform. it's more that it's one big balls up since people have been changed over.

it's not even pop compliant. it doesn't delete emails you tell it to.
the virgin groups are full with people complaining about the mess.

I think the majority don't need the new features. I'd say the majority just needed it simple as it was.

even having to use recent: so you can check emails from any computer is a job in itself.

When you do get changed over to Google mail. don't be suprised when you get a whole load of very old emails that you thought you had deleted off the server turn up in your mail box.
that shouldn't have happened. they shouldn't exist. they should have been deleted off the server, but someone has been holding onto them.

GARY L, i have contacted Virgin about this matter and they tell me it is a Windows Mail Identities problem.

I checked my Identities and it seems that it have been a modification by Microsoft.

One big balls up?

I hardly think so. The issues of a few people on the VM newsgroups do not make this "one big balls up".

So I may get a few old emails back? No biggie, I can manage that, and I get the benefits of:

7GB storage.
Full SSL pop3/SMTP compliance.
Better spam filtering, possibly, although the ntlworld.com system is pretty good.
A stable platform. (Go check those newsgroups again and look at the complaints they had prior to this new system).

All-in-all this is a major improvement in my opinion. I've had a Gmail address for a number of years now, I can't see this being a balls up, aside from the odd migration glitch.

Bring it on.

Don't worry about it friend, there are always good reasons for these minor issues. Sadly when some people see the chance to associate it with Virgin Media, their like a dog with an old bone.

There's loads. I know of others in general forums saying they're not getting any emails from ebay and more.

It's emails going back months ago. they were supposed to be deleted but they kept hold of them without you knowing until they dump them all back at you.
if that isn't a security issue I don't know what is.

it's not full pop3 compliant though.
there's more complaints now than there ever has been?!

Yeh, it's just niggly things having to add recent: just to make something work.

The are no extra calls coming in over issues with the platform migration, regardless of what you may see on different forums.

If people are having problems they should call in, and if the is an issue it will be investigated.

That is a google trait and comes with the platform.

I am also a @blueyonder.co.uk user and I have had no issues with the migration and it even works on my Nokia 5800, it just works.

Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!

my migration was ok too... not noticed any issues so far myself. All my emails are still coming in as before and sending ok.

I only thing i had was some emails being sent back to me that I had sent via webmail last year... not big prob for me as it was about 6 mails.

As Moldova says.. if you have any real issues then call Support

I've started to remove all my mailboxes as I can't stand this 'shinny new' - non-standards compliant rubbish. Granted it was never my main email as I have my own domains, but at least for what I used it for it worked as it should.
