Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!
At the moment we're given, what, five mailboxes with three aliases apiece (from memory)? I take it we're not going to be offered five 7GB mailboxes with the new service, so are they consolidating all of the existing mailboxes into one large mailbox? I have all five in use with different aliases and passwords and don't really fancy the prospect of other members of my family poking around in my email. How does Gmail work with regard to this?

When it inconveniences a fair number of people with no way to get around it other than breaking the t&c's of the service, yes, it is.
You don't protect idiots by removing valid functionality from users that actually have a clue what they're doing. If you're dumb enough to open a random .exe and get yourself infected with a virus because you have no AV and an IQ in single digits then that's your fault and you should live with the consequences. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops renaming files and hiding their extensions because people are stupid.
It's like solving knife crime by banning the sale of all knives. Sure it might solve the problem, but what happens when I need a knife to carve a nice joint of pork!

If virgin media want to protect people then tell them how dont limit there ability to send particular files!
I often create .cmd files to automatically do things on friends pcs so I dont have to explain something technical to someone who doesnt care.. .bas files are useful as this is the standard file format for Visual Basic Files allowing me to create custom functions and pass them on to my friends.
There has go to be a way to stop this?? No??? Why not...
Looks like I am going to have encrypt them and send instructions on how to decrypt my attachments! or password protect the ZIP file!
Pathetic and completely useless VM

Not pathetic at all..OK, so you create CMD and VB files and email them to friends for legitimate reasons. Fair enough. You can find another archive format and use that. A little inconveniant, but do able.
In the mean time, this will protect a *lot* of users from running infected attachments. After all, if they don't know enough about computer security to known not to run attachments from strangers, they are unlikely to know where to find the documentation that tells them they shouldn't.
Put simply, we've had people advising newbies not to run these attachments (including IIRC on several pages in VM's help site) for years. It hasn't worked.

Some file types are blocked
As a security measure to prevent potential viruses, Virgin Media Mail doesn't allow you to send or receive executable files (such as files ending in .exe) that could contain damaging executable code. We also do not allow certain other types of potentially harmful files, with ending as listed here: ".ade", ".adp", ".bas", ".bat", ".chm", ".cmd", ".com", ".cpl", ".crt", ".dll", ".hlp", ".hta", ".inf", ".ini", ".ins", ".isp", ".jse", ".lib", ".lnk", ".mdb", ".mde", ".msc", ".msi", ".msp", ".mst", ".ocx", .pages, ".pcd", ".pif", ".reg", ".scr", ".sct", ".shb", ".shs", ".sys", ".url", ".vb", ".vbe", ".vbs", ".vxd", ".wsc", ".wsf" and ".wsh".
Virgin Media Mail won't accept these types of files even if they are sent in a zipped (.zip, .tar, .tgz, .taz, .z, .gz) format. If this type of message is sent to your Virgin Media Mail account, it is bounced back to the sender automatically.

I'm disgusted by this. It like being at work.
So I cannot send a *.bat file to someone to help them out, what if I rename it *.bak and tell them to rename it.
Next step banning attachments

Wouldn't surprise me.

As virginmedia are just using Google then I imagine it will be Google who will be scanning email for ad opportunities, like they do with google apps

You need some perspective. Doing this protects millions of users, while inconveniencing maybe a few thousand (being generous here).

Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!
Has anybody thought about just changing the extensions of the files that they're sending, or compressing/packing them using a non-blocked format?
