Christmas brings back bad memories

Every Christmas I will think of two people I worked with and their families that have been affected by terrible events, even though I'm not related they affected me.

1) I worked with his mother, and with in 2 months she aged about 5 years. Police know who done it but don't have proof.

Father-of-one X Y, 30, was found alight (after being doused in petrol) in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, on 5 December, 2002.

Neighbours heard Mr Y screaming and rushed out of their homes to smother the flames. But he suffered 90% burns and died hours later.

Mr Y had been on his way home from work at a plastics factory in Hendon, north London. He lived with his pregnant wife Ann and their young son.

Police launched a murder investigation, but no-one has ever been charged in relation to the incident.

2) I work with this guy, whose daughter suffered from leukemia. We received this email after the Christmas holiday. It took several attempts to read it without tears in my eyes (even now just skimming through it there back)

Dear All,

It is with deepest sorrow that I announce the passing of my beautiful daughter X.

She died on 27 December 2008 at 21:10 after spending nearly a week in intensive care due to complications associated with her Bone Marrow Transplant. Both my wife and I were with her when she passed away.

She was a truly remarkable little girl with tremendous courage and a forgiving nature. Not once during her 3 year ordeal did she complain about any of her treatment or pain she had to endure, and I cannot describe in words how extremely proud I am to have been her daddy.

We both knew that it was going to be very difficult for her to survive this particular episode, her condition was so severe towards the end that she was living on a knife edge which could of taken months for her to overcome.

Half an hour before she died I whispered these words into her ear, for those of you that do not know this is a song by Rodgers and Hammerstein which has been made famous by Liverpool Football Club and has been sung at Anfield for over 40 years.

The words are very poignant both for X and I as supporters of Liverpool Football Club but now even more so to me as her father

I lost my father one xmas, he's had a lung out the year before in November due to cancer but 8 months later found out it was terminal. December was a nightmare trying to care for him, he was that doped up with Morphine he couldn't do anything and was incoherent most of the time..

After calling the doctor out 3 times on xmas day it was decided it was time for him to go into hospital so we spent xmas night in casualty until they could find him a bed, he eventually passed away on the 29th (at least he was then on a proper morphine drip so was out of it and not in any pain)

I remember me and my mother dragging ourselves into the Manchester Royal Infirmary canteen on Boxing day for our first meal in about 72 hours, Boxing day is her Birthday so was glad she had at least a few hours of peace and quiet and some food

So now I don't tend to do xmas as although it all happened many, many years ago it's not something that I could even enjoy anymore.

But to all those who do celebrate I hope you have a good one..

Yes at this time of the year we always feel acutely aware of the dreadful pain and longing of all those parents at our youngest's special school who've lost their little ones this year and in previous ones.

It puts pretty much everything else into perspective...

I agree, the guy in the second story has had a crap year not only has he and his wife lost a little girl, but they have both been made redundant.

oh what a jolly thread. I am sorry for other peoples pain but if they aint close to me or part of my faimily seeing as I am unable to do anything about it im not gonna let it get me down

Some people just seem to have so many bad things happen to them, I wonder how they continue. But then they must have so much spirit to have gotten through losing their daughter - I wish them every luck for the future. As a Liverpool fan, please pass on my wishes and remind them YNWA

last time I looked this was a public forum. I have posted about a painful experience in my life to but that was personal to me . Crap happens every day if you let it get to you it will drive you crazy
