A Young mum jumped to her death with her son after her income support benefits were stopped.
Another Major cockup for the benefits system in the UK read here...

Re: Young mum and son Suicide
I read todays paper which carried this story, together with another story that Bin Lids son was also over here looking for asylum. He is being fed, clothed & housed, this young girl with a baby wasn't so lucky.
What a rotten system we have. Protect the rotten & dump the rest.

He isn't here, certainly not being fed, clothed and housed, and he was refused entry anyway:

Saudi national Omar Bin Laden, 28, had tried to overturn a decision by immigration officials to refuse him entry to the UK last year as the 'husband' of five-times previously married grandmother Jane Felix-Brown on the grounds that it breached their human rights

Anyway, On topic. Tragic Incident

Re: Young mum and son Suicide
At the end of the day this woman wasnt homeless. There are plenty of people in worse off situations than that of which she was in.It is a shame she took her life but things were not as desperate as she obviously thought they were. If she was not entitled to benefits she was not entitled to benefits simple as plenty of people keep slagging off those on benefits anyway on this forum

People slag them off because they neglect to understand that not everyone on benefits conforms to their stereotype of someone of benefits. It would seem here she was probably entitled to benefits but got trapped in the system, it's certainly harsh that her benefits are withdrawn and Hackney ask for £200 back.
People don't think clearly under stress either. I doubt she logically concluded it would all be ok and instead cracked under the strain.

Re: Young mum and son Suicide
Tragic.
What a dreadful mess Social Services are in.
Mind you it seems nothing has changed. Years and years ago after my wife died leaving me to bring up two young children on my own the only thing I was offered was to keep on working and let the kids fend for themself or let them be taken into care. I took that as being given two fingers. IIRC the kids were aged about 12 and 8 years old. Not babies but IMO too young to be left to their own devices until I got home from work. Needless to say there wasn't a happy ending to it.
From my personal experiences, Social Services, in General, are a waste of space.

It doesnt seem things have changed much Mick. Mum is a foster carer and obviously the best place for children to stay is within family if at all possible. But family members dont receive the pay that foster carers do, they get child benefit and have to make do with it.
Just recently mum mentioned how a gran had to give her two grandchildren up because she couldn't afford to keep them, yet a foster carer is paid approximately £400 a week (depending on age of child). The gran had chosen to take on her daughters kiddies as her daughter had a drug or drink problem, yet she had to give them up eventually ending being put up for adoption, so sad.
Mum has two kiddies with her atm, with their other brother staying with another foster carer. They are hoping to adopt them altogether, but there are no promises
btw, so sad that the mother felt she had no choice

Re: Young mum and son Suicide
I just re-read my post and it reads like I gave up my children.
Just to set the record straight I didn't. I soldiered on, without any help at all, and just did the best I could.

It's like something out of a Dickens novel...
