Smile SA V+ box recent software update and speed increase

Has anybody else noticed a speed increase since a recent update in the software for the SA V+ box? Our virgin service went down briefly last week but when it came back the V+ box was much more responsive - changing channels and selection is now much faster.

Here in Cambridge I still have S/W version 3.2.8.1, with no speed increase when changing channels etc. What is your S/W version number?

Have you deleted any recordings from the v+ boxes as removing recordings speeds up the menus, as if you have loads of content on it it will slow it down my mum had about 10 hours free on hers and it was grinding to a hault

she didnt want to get rid of her recordings but becuase the box had a fault and the only way to rid of the fault was a reboot and format her box improved greatly

so it might be that you have got rid of some recordings within that time and have noticed it been quicker so my thoughts on what may have increased the speed

The settings indicate the following:-
Application Version: 23.80.1p76/20090701r1
HW Type: SA8300
HW Version: 1.7
SW Version: 3.2.8.1

Another post indicates that amount of free disc space could effect speed. I did clear out some old recordings going from 30 to 50 hours free so this may account for the speed - but now I can change channel almost as fast as I can press the button i.e. about 8 channels a second!

Its probabley you have freed up more space making it quicker

Can someone quantify what the speed of the V+ box is when it is "slow". I'm currently on the point of deciding to move (not sure if the appropriate word is upgrade or downgrade!) from a TiVo to a V+. One of my main concerns is the talk of slow response to button presses as on the few occasions where I interact with my existing VM STB directly the response is *appalling* - i.e. 5 to 10 secs to respond to each button press! Normally I browse/change channels via the TiVo menu so its not a problem but if V+ is anything approaching this slow then it sounds almost unusable.

All your version numbers above are identical to mine. I wouldn’t have thought that your box would have materially speeded up by reason of your programme deletions. You were only down to 30 hours free, if you had been as low as say 10 hours or so then probably yes. I have been down as low as 20 hours and not noticed any slowdown, although currently I’m managing to keep the free space around the 40 hour mark - a little difficult with HD one hour programmes taking 5/6 hours of disc space.

Anyway, for whatever reason, you appear to be the proud owner of an extremely fast SA box – enjoy!

I have noticed my V+ box has recently changed to Application Version: 23.80.1p76. A few days ago it was just 23.80.1. It's also been 23.80.1p75 recently.

Maybe it's just a placebo effect, but since the application update, my V+ seems a tad quicker, especially on first boot when the remote doesn't respond for a while.

I personally think that the times you quote are unreasonable - I had 3 SA v+ boxes over 2 years, each started off ok & deteriorated past the stage you mention above (and no - the hard drive was not full before anyone asks) - ultimately the last box stopped responding and stuck on one channel - Seems weird to me that all of th SA boxes I have seem to suffer the same fate - Virgin Tech came and swapped out for a new Samsung box last week which is undoubtably faster than any SA box I have had (even when they worked properly from new) - The Samsung is very quick - on a par with a Sky Box I would say (so far)!

Re: SA V+ box recent software update and speed increase

I understood that following this update that it would now be possible to record the radio stations, as you can with the new Samsung boxes, but still cannot do so on my SA.

As far as I know that update (which also is rumoured to include quicker V+ operation) hasn't landed yet. It's supposed to be coming sometime in October, but no date has been set yet (again as far as I am aware).

The original poster's speed increase could be due to getting rid of old recordings, and I think my change wasn't anything drastic, and was mostly in the mind. So, no, no new software has been released for the SA V+ yet.

The update has not happened yet. However i seem to remember (from another thread basedon updates) that the application version number does change on first access of VOD the p75 or 76 bit

That probably explains why I've been seeing this tag come and go over the past few weeks. Usually my V+ cuts out during live TV and then reverts to plain 23.80.1. When I then play VOD maybe the p76/p75 is being added to application version.

So my speed increases are probably down to wishful thinking, and reading about the new, forthcoming, speedy software on the cable forum everyday Still, looking forward to the software update when it does come - hope it lives up to expectations

Re: SA V+ box recent software update and speed increase

My V+ has started to have a 'glitch' every so often. The screen will go completely black/blank just for a second or two. It's not the TV as it doesn't happen when I switch to my other Freeview box or the TV. Has anybody else had this or any idea what might be causing it? My box was installed brand new about 9 months ago and is one of the older sort.
