Using ntlworld email outside VM network
Hi,
I set up an additional @ntlworld.com email address for my parents to use (who are not with VM). They tried using the webmail interface to start with, but it isn't fantastic, so I thought I'd set them up with Thunderbird. Receiving emal works fine, but when they try to send an emal it gives an error about invalid greeting being sent or something (didn't write it down).
My only guess, is that the smtp.ntlworld.com server recognizes that they d not have a VM IP address so it's rejecting it, but it is only a guess. Anybody any ideas or is ther no way around it?
TIA

Re: Using ntlworld email outside VM network
Your guess is correct
Your only options are to use webmail or set up an alternative profile to use the outbound mail service on the network you are on

Do their ISP not provide an email service?

Easiest option is to set up an account for them with Googlemail.
That will work from either webmail or any email client and is ISP-independant.

Re: Using ntlworld email outside VM network
Thanks everyone. I guess they should get an email address (or addresses) with their broadband, but they never got a welcom pack, and it's a nightmare phoning them up. Will try, and if not will give the googlemail a go.

Was just about to ask the same, as the downloading/reading bit was fine.

Re: Using ntlworld email outside VM network
It will be, Virgin/NTL don't care where you download from - they just don't want people from other ISP's connections using their mail servers to send.

Re: Using ntlworld email outside VM network
Don't know if this will help, but if you are out of your own network, use the SMTP of the ISP you are on. For instance I have an NTL email, that isometimes check and send on my phone. In order to be able to send emails using my mobile I use Orange's SMTP settings smtp.orange.net so doing similar may work in your parents case. What ISP are they on?

Pipex - they never got given any detals like that when they joined though, and whenever they've phoned customer services it's been a waste of time. Might be abl to find out if Ido a bit of Google-ing though.

Re: Using ntlworld email outside VM network
I thought you could send via the VM SMTP servers from any ip address if you used authentication (ie your email address and password).
