Anybody used Puppy Linux with vm?

Hi
I'm trying out Puppy Linux but I can't connect it to the internet.
I've got a ntl:home 120 cable modem.
There's a connect wizard but I don't know how to use it.

Can anybody give me simple instructions.

Sometimes using virtual machines, it's no the OS causing problems with the network adapter, but the actual vm program, what are you using?

have you tried playing with bridging etc?

I assume your host OS is connecting to the internet OK, if that won't, then your VM one won't.

As for connecting Puppy to the internet, the wizard is pretty good IMHO, click on the eth0 discover usually works, at least for wired anyway.

it's a bit late tonight, but i'll try tomorrow, I use virtualbox, as you can run a vm off an ISO, but if you're using vmware the settings are fairly similar.

I don't know what I did.

I think the OP is using 'vm' to mean Virgin Media.
Never used Puppy Linux myself, but I would be surprised if it didn't use dhcp as standard.
Does Puppy pickup the network card correctly?
To find out, open a console as root (or su - within the console) and type
ifconfig
Make sure you have eth0 or lan0 listed. If it only shows details for 'lo' the network driver isn't running. That's kinda fundamental and you probably need a dedicated Puppy forum to sort it.
If it does show eth0 or lan0 what does it say about them (don't paste the full IP address or MAC address) - eg mine (not using dhcp) shows

I entered ifconfig.
Like you said, it shows eth0 and Lo.
(I can't figure out how to copy and paste from this Konsole!)
Maybe I was doing something wrong the first time round.

Puppy linux is easy to download (you can use torrents), then burn it to CD-R/RW, then boot from CD, then enter F2 and puppy toram to run it from RAM.
It's very fast!

Seems you may have sussed it out already but,if not,Puppy is easy enough to connect to the net using the wizard.
Just click the "connect" icon on the Desktop to open the Internet Connection Wizard then choose the "Connect to Internet by Network Interface" option in the "Connect" section.
If Puppy has loaded the correct module you can then click "eth0" and choose the Auto DHCP option on the next window.
If all goes well you will then be asked to save the Successful Network Configuration.

I'm back again.
I've re-booted and gone through the connect procedure again.
It's OK.
In case anyone else wants to try it.
Click on the 'connect' icon.
Choose second option 'Internet by network or Wireless LAN'
Then 'Check eth0'
Then 'Auto DCHP'.

Yes, it's just as xpod says. He beat me to it!

I began writing the thing about 20 minutes before i eventually got the opportunity to finish it and post it so i must have just got lucky this time.

lol, sorry for my misunderstanding, I just assumed vm to mean Virtual Machine, never occurred to me it means Virgin media to some ppl!

Other lightweight distros I like are:
DSL - Damn Small Linux
Slitaz
and
Vector Linux

I played a with a couple of Puppy "remixes" recently, TeenPup and macPup Opera.

teenPup on my PII450 was excellent, using the live cd with no tinkering, software installation it played some 700mb avi files flawlessly which are on the hard drive which most other OSs I've tried on there (installed or LiveCD) struggle with

Glad to hear you got it sorted ronald146m I've been running Ubuntu (now on 9.04) for the last year or so and would not go back to Windows. Don't game so the OS meets my needs I've now got LINUX MINT on my 2nd HDD have a look my son has put it on his ACER laptop and has downloaded a basic music studio tool to record tracks using his guitar and effects kit.

I've got a few other distros as well that I may try Open SUSE 11, PCLINUX OS and Fedora

I'm a Ubuntu user but I like to try out other distros sometimes, usually from LiveCD.
Puppy has a 'toram' option. Using this method it runs very fast.

Some other distros too have the toram option.

I have a spare hard drive from another PC so maybe I'll install Puppy on it later.

Just tried installing FEDORA10 on 80GB HDD and due to muppet error on my part wiped the UBUNTU OS. On install FEDORA asked to install on both drives and before I had a chance to untick the option it wiped the lot. Put LINUX MINT and 9.04 back on and luckily I backed all my photos on disk before hand. LINUX format magazine is pretty good plus you get a new distro each month on DVD
